Thanks both for this insightful exchange.

Being small in size, I expected that ebooks wont show any difference for page turning or searching. But on the other side, for pdf reading/searching makes some difference? I've seen that at some moment you mentioned "maps" but I do not know what kind of format file they are in...

The device is basically rendering each internal file and then displaying a window in that as it you turn the page. The bigger the internal file (more word, tags etc.) the longer the rendering takes and then displaying the page of text. And, the further into that file, the longer each page turn takes. I have a 3.7million word book that is broken nicely into about 800 chapters. Reading that is no problem. The page turning speed is the same wherever you are in the book. But, for testing, I merged all internal files into one file. It would open, and paging at the start was OK. But, if I tried to go to a page near the end of the book, it could take minutes. I did this a while ago, so I don't remember the exact details.

As far as I can see, the Kobo device do a good job of rendering PDFs. If you get a PDF that was designed for a page size similar to the device, it work well. But, most PDFs are designed for A4 or Letter paper sizes. That means you have to zoom in to read. And the navigation when doing this is terrible. It is slow and uncomfortable, and rarely worth it.

For "maps", I assume the mention is related to maps in books. The format of the map doesn't matter as long as it is a legal format in epubs. When you read, the map, or any other embedded image, will be displayed according the the tags used and the styles applied. The only other affects they have are that they make the book larger, and might make opening them and turning the page slower when they are to be displayed.

epub or kobo.epub?

By the way, yes, it would be an interesting test, and, probably, the speed of the sd card would matter here (or maybe not).

But I simply do not have books that are so crookedly made that would not take into account the number of characters on the html page and would not be divided. But I have heard such claims on the paging speed (users simply created books with a converter, not understanding this and not wanting to understand).

I have done it a couple of times with different sized books. I don't remember if I tried kepub with this one. With a 500K word book, the kepub was only a bit slower while the epub was more than 10 seconds to turn the page.

Apologies for reviving an old thread but it appears I have a very similar issue to the OP with my Clara HD.

I had powered it off and just restarted it and was greeted by the restoring screen.

It has been stuck on the restoring screen since (most of the day). The screen shows 5 boxes, 1 is solid the other four are outlines.

The light is visible on the power button.

The device was at 100% battery having just been charged overnight.

I can't turn it off or get any response from it no matter how long the button is pressed.

I'd appreciate any suggestions on what I can try to get it going again.

Thanks

Plug it in an charge it. Do not assume the charge level as if it has gotten into some sort of loop, it could have run the battery down a lot quicker than normal.

If it has hung, then the normal power off will not do anything. You need to hold the power button down for 20 seconds and it should force the device to power off. But, this is does not let the device do a clean shutdown and the screen will not update. It will continue showing what was in the screen when you do this. After powering off this way, turn it on and watch what happens. Does the power LED come on? Does the screen change? If it gets hung like above again, you probably need to do a factory reset. This will wipe everything from the device. The instructions are at https://help.kobo.com/hc/en-us/artic...HD-or-Kobo-Nia. For step 2, you will need to do what I have said above.

Thanks davidfor,

With the hung screen it is very hard if not impossible for me to tell what the device is doing.

I have tried the manual restore and done the 20 second power button hold down (the led goes off after about 4 to 5 seconds)

When I turn it back on the led does come on but the screen still shows the 5 boxes and "restoring"

Seeing the screen is stuck at a very early stage of the restore process I suspect I'm not going to be able to complete manual resets with the state the device is currently in.

It's been back on the charger for most of the day.

That probably means it is powering off. The suggestion for 20 seconds is to guarantee it is if the device has hung, the shorter period might not be enough.

If you follow the steps and it doesn't restore, then it is another issue. Does the screen change when you turn it on?

If the manual factory reset doesn't work, you can try restoring the image I have sent you.

The screen was 100% unchanging even if I held the power down for over a minute.

I had a spare 32GB micro sd card here that I was able to restore the image you supplied and we are back with a fully functioning Clara HD.

Thanks davidfor!
