Security-wise there is not really much to be afraid of concerning Android. You certainly do not need to keep personal data on an e-book reader and if you have minimal awareness as to what applications not to install, there should be no problems.

I have a Nova 3 and the only thing I'm missing is water resistance. In every other respect it beats Oasis hands down. Nova is obviously a step over Poke, but price-wise it is close to Oasis.
No page-turn buttons, though. For me that's a dealbreaker.

I find the Libra easy to hold and use one-handed for an hour or two at a time, no problem. The page buttons make it very easy. And now that I have KOReader installed, I can put the device down and have the Autoturn function turn the pages for me completely hands free, when I need a rest.

Also, apparently KOReader has better PDF viewing than Kobo's stock reader.

You can use a BT remote control for this and I prefer that to buttons that are always in the wrong place.

The buttons are not in the wrong place for me, they're a a perfect fit. And a BT remote control is not hands free, unless controlled by telepathy/telekinesis. It is another device to buy, and to keep charged. KOReader's Autoturn feature is literally hands free, no extra purchase required, just tick the box, set the time for each autoturn, and it's done. Clicking a button on a bluetooth remote is exactly as much work as clicking a page turn button, it offers no advantage, and adds several disadvantages, listed above.

Would you suggest installing KOReader immediately after purchase or will the default reader be sufficient for epubs with pictures?

I have had my Libra for several months, and only installed KOReader last week. There is nothing wrong with the stock reader for epubs, that's for sure. I only installed KOReader out of curiosity. The Libra is a fine device out of the box, in my opinion.

Okay, thank you everyone. I did not expect to get as many reactions as I have got. I think I am going to buy Kobo Libra H2O, though the shipping will take at least a week. In the meantime, could you suggest me a couple of mods/tweaks which are handy to have on Libra? Thank you very much.

You should get used to the software that comes with the Libra. I've had my H2O for just over 6 years without KOReader.

My standard advice would be no mods or tweaks on the device. Use the built in features and see what YOU like / dislike and only then look at the firmware patches and other changes available.

However do get used to using calibre and do install some of the Kobo plugins, especially the excellent Kobo Utilities. Optionally the Kobo Touch Extended plugin could be installed if you feel you want to read side loaded content in the Kobo Epub (kepub) format.

If there are any more questions about your Libra, ask in the Kobo forum where it will be seen by more Kobo users.

I've only ever found the need to edit the text config file on my original H2O and Libra. It does all I want otherwise.
I do use KOReader on the Mars, but don't have any need for it on the Libra.

I do absolutely depend on Calibre and the plugins: Apprentice Alf for books I buy off Amazon, Cover creator, Cover lookup, Kobo Touch Extended (but with kepub turned off), Kobo Utilities (backup database and fetch annotations on one book), Split and Merge Epubs.

Why use the Kobo Touch Extended with kepub turned off instead of the Kobo Touch driver?

What makes you think flush screen versus recessed screen makes any difference whatsoever in the touch layer?

What evidence do you have that the tere is any difference between the touch layers of the PW3 and the PW4?

I have Oasis 3, PaperWhite 4, Aura One, and Glowlight Plus. The PW4 is to loan to a friend or for if the Oasis croaks. I like the Kobo and Nook fine but never use them. They were both purchased to see if something better than the Oasis is out there. They are both very good but neither one scores any runs the Oasis can't.

I've thought about getting a Boox to get a larger screen than the Oasis. I'd get the 10.3" if I did. That's the only reason I'd try anything other than the Oasis now. The Oasis screen just isn't as large as I'd like. I don't know if I could get Amazon books to go direct to the Boox with the Kindle app installed or not. I know it would work somehow.

Good luck with your decision.
