When you plug your reader into your Chromebook 's USB it should ask if you want to 'continue reading' or 'manage my library'. If it does not do that, it would seem to me that your Kobo reader does not get the 5V power from the Chromebook through the USB cable. Did you try attaching a portable disk drive or any other USB device (USB mouse for example) and see if that works? Do you have multiple USB ports and tried them all? This problem is not related to Calibre for sure.

@michel416, just as an FYI, @jdta09's Kobo Aura Ed.2 should display a Cancel/Connect popup. I had to think back a few years to my original Kobo for the messages you were mentioned, back to when I could connect my Kobo to a Blackberry using Bluetooth.

Thanks @DNSB, I was just relating what my own (older) Kobo displays. I was not aware this is different for other models. In any event the outcome is the same, it should display a choice between continue reading or connecting to the computer. My apologies if this caused confusion. What model e-reader do you have @jdta09?

From his displayed information, a Kobo Aura Edition 2. Do you notice a difference between your original Kobo and your Kobo Libra H2O (going from your displayed information) when connecting to your computer?

I believe the real issue is lack of USB support in the Linux environment of Chrome OS.

For storage devices you can allow access to the device from the Chrome OS files application (right click on the device and select Share with Linux). This allows access to the file system at /mnt/chromeos/removable/KOBOeReader/ . However lsusb does not show any USB devices as being connected.

Now within the Chrome OS settings for Linux (Beta) there is an option "Manage USB devices" which is meant to "Give Linux apps permission to access USB devices. Only supported devices are shown", the attached Kobo is not shown. Somehow I think that mass storage class devices will not appear here.

And before someone chimes in, yes, when the Kobo is connected to the Chromebook the prompt IS displayed to connect to the device.

@DNSB I do not know yet how my Kobo Libra displays this. I guess I was a bit premature putting it in my profile; it is wrapped as a Christmas present and sitting under our tree. I'll know in a few weeks.
