That would only be true on a full RGB scanned PDF.
It's instant page turn on every real pdf on Kobo and even the 10 year old Kindle Keyboard / KK3 with a publisher font / KF8 option.

I have a very good Android 10" tablet and it's no better on real ebooks, but good on A4 size full colour PDFs, though slower than ebooks.
I have a three year old 7" Android and it's SLOWER than the ven the 10 year old Kindle Keyboard / KK3 with a publisher font / KF8 option.
The Kobo Libra is much faster on PDFs than even the Original H2O, but not all are suitable for a 7" screen. The A5 size and similar PDF operating manuals are a good bit slower than an epub, but not even one second on the Libra. About 1s on the H2O, which isn't as good resolution for a PDF anyway.

I did have an ancient Kobo Touch for a while and it too was fine on real ebooks, proper reflowable epub2.

I'm looking hard at the Galaxy tab A 8.4 Anyone have it, if so, what do you think of it and what is it's actual screen dimensions (not the tablet dimensions)?

I have a page in the wiki called Screen sizes that contains an 8.4 device among lots of others. It is likely the same but I am researching this.

Thanks. A very helpful site!

I'm surprised that the screen size on the 8.4 at 7.13" x 4.46" is larger than the ipad mini at 6.3" x 4.7"!

I am glad you liked it. Actually the aspect ratio has a lot to do with the dimensions. That is why I include area on the chart.

I use the Kobo outdoors and the difference in page turning is noticeable. Glad others don't have that problem, but I want a Tablet, not eInk.
Most do not even take a fraction of a second, however if there is something wrong with your one just hit the page turn just before finishing the page. What will have something wrong will be your eyes if you do many hours of reading with backlit lcd. By the way I have a tab A 8 which is fine for reading for a while, it has a blue filter which improves comfort..

ernieh, I know lots of people have problems with their eyes reading on lcd screens. I'm not one of them. I worked in the computer industry many years, spent most of the day looking at screens and never had eye problems. Currently I'm on my computer or reading with lcd screens probably 8 hours a day with no eye strain. I understand there is some sort of colored lenses now recommended for people that have such problems.

Actually working with computers all day is not to be compared with dedicated reading, if after using the machine for work for 8 hours you then spent 6 or more hours reading a book you would soon see the difference. Anyway, lets see how you feel about it in a few years, I suspect that dedicated readers who argue the point cross over to the dark side (e-paper) in a future time

Thought I'd try ereaders again, since several of you have disputed my saying they were slow. I just tried my Kobo Aura one - NO just no. I even looked at the Paperwhite - as far as I can tell you can't set the left margin to go forward, so it is a no Possibly one of the newer ereaders might be fast enough, but none of the wikis actually show what a reading page looks like. I'm not going to buy ereaders just in case their software might work for me. If I only read occasionally any probably would be good enough. But with covid, I read most of the day and want what I want, which is probably not what the majority of people want, thus my dilemma.

Here's another option for you!

Besides this, I used to have a Samsung Galaxy Tab S3 with an 8.4 inch display. If you can find a used one in good condition, that would be an excellent choice.

Thanks, I'll add them to my comparison list. I like that the Lenovo is so much cheaper than the galaxy 8.4.

I just recently got the Lenovo M8 HD Tablet. It's an 8" tablet. I really like it a lot. Has fantastic battery life, Android 9, and works great right out of the box. I think this form factor is my favorite of the tablet size. I also have an Ipad Pro 11, and I actually prefer this for reading. I bought the 16GB one and ordered a 256GB micro SD card and stuck that in for storage. The tablet itself was $100 with a case on Amazon.

Definitely worth it!

Thanks I'll add it to my list. Still thinking about the form factors.

Dunno if this one is the same but it also comes with Google Home. I'm not sure what advantages that offers since Google Home is yet another Android app you can install from the Play store. See the following under Tablets & Phones. $60 from Walmart, $89 on the Lenovo site. At that price it could be the minimum amount of ram (2 GB ram, 32 GB disk). Look on youtube for reviews and unboxing.

Thanks everyone, I've decided to go with the Galaxy tab A 8.4. Now to find some decent reading software - my previous was several Android versions back, I'm not sure what has changed in the software currently. I know Bookari is no longer supported. I used to like Moon+Reader. Hopefully it hasn't changed much.
