I don't use the ePub Annotation feature in 5, but the fact that new tables are there doesn't seem to stop versions 2 and 3 doing what I want. Some plugins add tables to the database schema but they don't get in the way of 'business as usual' functionality. My memory of the database wars is that one advantage of a Codd relational database like DB2 over a Bachmann network database like IDS was the relative ease of adding new entities to the schema. But I still think in terms of network structures ![]() BR |

I figure the worst that could happen is that any annotations stored in the database may be lost.
There seems to be a few layers of redundancy to this though - the annotations are also stored as jsons in the appdata folder, and embedded in the ePub if that's enabled, so if they did disappear they would hopefully restore themselves to the annotation browser after opening the book again. I'm not sure what you mean by "annotations" but the ebook reader in v4 displays annotations nicely as exist in "The Annotated Pride and Predujice".

We are on about User (done) Annotations. There is no standard and not all devices have a easy to use 'Notes' feature. Then, they are only usable on that brand. Calibre just made their version available to users (the Interop is still a no-go) |

It seems to me that there should be an epub annotations standard.

As much as I like that cartoon, isn't the problem that there is no current standard for ebook annotations? Adding one would actually be good so that the apps and devices could implement it.
Of course, I don't actually expect that it would be implemented anywhere useful. I doubt that Amazon would. I think Kobo might have if it was there when they started, but I don't know about now. So, it would be up to app developers to implement and see what happens. Of course, I can't help wondering how long after a standard came out before a "better" one came out. |

There is a draft for an Open Annotations in EPUB standard, made by the IDPF.
But it is stuck as a draft since 2015... so, I wouldn't hold my breath. |
