i don't have any missing books on my ereader. the problem is the number of my books showing on the home screen is wrong in a downward direction.

it will be interesting to see if it drops down a third time.

Ok, found 1 possible cause to get an offset to the amount of books.

I tested on an empty KA2 v1 the adding of 26 CBR / CBZ files directly (no calibre involved) and noticed that KA2 reported only 25 to be present, while 26 files physically were present.
It turned out that the Kobo FW is picky about fact that the file extension must match the *magical number* of the file contents. The "missing" file was of type "PK" (zip compressed file), while the file-extension was .CBR (suggesting a RAR compressed file). Adjusting the file extension to the correct .CBZ one solved this problem and the file was now correctly recognized and counted.

As this is a file mistake you will not quickly encounter as viewers tend to silently correct, it might be 1 of the causes of the incorrect amount of files mentioned.

I found a 2nd definite cause to get an offset to the amount of books.

It is caused as follows: on the upper left part of the Home Page you see a line of previously opened books. A long press on one of those books provides you with options for that book, one of which is the "Remove" option. Selecting that one will present 2 options "Remove from Home" and "Remove from My Books".

I did recently used option "Remove from Home" for 5 books: that "Hides" them from showing on the Home Page, but have them still present in My Books.

However, each time you do this, the My Books count on the Home Page itself is decremented for that "Hidden" book. You won't see that immediately, only when the Home Page is refreshed. So the Kobo FW registers the "Hiding" from just the Home Page as if the book is removed completely from the system. This causes the value on the Home Page to differ from the one on TAB My Books:filter All.

I'm not sure this is a "feature" or a left over from the time that there was only 1 Remove option available: the complete book removal.

By re-selecting all the "Hidden" books, those books appear on the Home Page top again, the My Books value is incremented and is thereafter in sync with the rest of the total book counts.

It took some time, but now I'm also a happy reader again.

thank you. well spotted. if you long press and mark as finished instead of remove from the home page the book is still removed, but the count stays the same even after the home screen as been refreshed.

Yes, but that has as disadvantage that you loose the last reading location, which might not what you want.

long pressing and removing from the home screen is (obviously) acting as if i was removing it from my books/the device. which is why the book count goes down accordingly by how many books i've dismissed. once i open the said book/books again the book count goes back up to the correct number.

How were you able to find the hidden books? The most I could do is mark anything opened (but not finished) as unread, and that didn't change the homescreen count under My Books at all.

By coincident I recognized 6 opened books, of which I knew 5 were recently marked "hidden" (and I also had a count difference of 5). So I simply accessed 1 of that books and presto, the My Books counter did increase by 1. The rest is history ...

That's what I started doing after I posted, but I'm still short 6 books. And those 6 really could be anything, even a misclick that opened a book accidentally. The only way I can think of finding them is to just remove all books and add them back again.

I'd really classify this miscount as a bug since you're selecting "Remove from Home" and not "Remove from My Books".

As I'm unaware of the functional specs used by Kobo, I would classify it myself as an anomaly

To help you: did you ever used this "hide" option? Or do you have CBR/CBZ files? If not, then there might be a 3th issue involved, not yet identified.

agreed. it's not too many Firmware's back that if you long pressed on a book on the home screen the only remove option you had was to remove from my books/delete from device. it seems to me that since they've added the remove from home screen only the firmware hasn't been updated to reflect that change. hence the reason why the count goes down because it still thinks the book as been deleted.

I have used the hide option at times, mostly to keep my next 4 reads easily available. So if I misclicked or just wanted to check formatting of a new book, I'd then remove it from the homescreen. The only formats I ever use are epub mostly, a few kepubs (mostly to trigger the change of fonts if ever need to shut down the reader), and a handful of pdfs. Never any CBR/CBZ files.

And I'd say their functional specs are just wrong and need changing .
