In fact, not only can you buy books for Kindle form other stores, (like Smashwords or Baen), Amazon lets you either sideload by USB or load up to their cloud service for syncing across devices,, something no other vendor offers. (maybe google books?)

I'm glad the author likes his new Reader. I certainly like my Kobo, but this kind of reporting is just .... bad.
I think this a combination of things like Kindle's not be directly compatible with larger eBook stores like B&N, Google Play, Kobo, etc. And the way Amazon advertises the Kindle. It's not something they really advertise on the product page and the ability to use outside store books.

Even looking at the users guide, they have a whole section on "getting content" (just from the store) but sideloading is instead pushed all the way to chapter 8 and they mostly talk about sending your "personal" documents with only a single sentence in the experimental web browser section about downloading books to read.

So if you're not steeped in it, it's a feature I can see people overlooking.

I dunno. I think the heat and rage of iOS vs. Android has really simmered down.

And I did find the comparison of Android/iOS to Kindle/Kobo apt.
