You can't really expect us to get anything out of Kindle logs from a 10 lines tail. The barest glance at those should have told you that they're *ridiculously* verbose
![]() But even more interesting would be a verbose dmesg/lsusb log from a Linux *client* ![]() If USBMS export is blocked (i.e., demo, I think? I don't recall the account status affecting that, and it certainly wasn't the case the last time I setup a Kindle... 4 years ago xD), it's *really* blocked: you never even see the "Connected to USB" screen. As long as you see that one, USBMS should work (barring volumd mishaps). |

I never see the "Connected to USB" screen I'm afraid -- only a list of languages (Deutsch, English (United Kingdom)...) -- the first step, I believe, of setup.
Is there a way perhaps to break out of that setup/onboarding, perhaps flagging "skipped" in some file somewhere? |

Ah. You *do* have to choose a language, from my murky memories of this.
The earliest "get me out of here" option is hidden away twelve options (or so ;p) deep when it starts asking you to connect to Wi-Fi, IIRC. It's probably explained in more details by people who've actually done it recently, and/or have updated the fake registration hack for current FW. |

Thank you all for your help. It's 2am here, but I've really had a blast and I'm delighted to say that it looks like it's basically working now. See photo attached. (I need the proper dimensions for the paperwhite -- what are they?)
What I did: I used this tutorial a bit https://gist.github.com/TobiasWooldr...ca75190b9a473f following it just far enough to get USB mode (from the diagnostics menu), and then the Kindle appeared like magic on my computer desktop as a mass storage device. I'm afraid earlier I also played around with all things wifi-related, and have now caused the kindle to spit out a bunch of error messages into the terminal every 15 seconds or so, but if I ignore it it's fine. I'm going to load up a nice collection of family photos as PNGs tomorrow, and pop them into the screensaver folder, replacing Amazon's ones. Then I'm DONE. No need to jailbreak or whatnot. I've had my fill for this week. Thanks so much again for all the help -- seriously, very much appreciated!! ![]() |
