Had this issue too earlier today.
A restart of the router seemed to fix the bug.
Don't know if it will work with you too.

Nope, seems that as long Kobo is not running their site, I can't log in. I'll wait. Don't want to hack my new Clara right now.

Nope. The restart of the router did not fix anything. Their error message could be more informative.
I do see that their servers are down when trying to reach them from a laptop, but I would never guess that if their website is down, then I would not be able to refresh my articles from Pocket.

To their credit, this rarely happens. I can't recall the last time the servers were down for so long a time period.

From Kobos Facebook

Service update: At 6am EST today, Rakuten Kobo initiated an infrastructure outage in order to make maintenance updates. The maintenance has taken longer than expected, and we sincerely apologize for this inconvenience. We hope to be back online soon.

For the record, when you connect to WiFi, the device tries to fetch a URL from Kobo's server. If this fails, it will give message about this. With older firmware, the device would not let you continue using WiFi if thi happened. With recent firmware, it should be displaying the message that @steveparry posted, "It looks like the network you've joined has no internet connection. Would you like to continue?" If you agree to continue, the WiFi will be enabled, and you should be able to use it.

If the problem is the Kobo servers being down, as it was in this case, if you choose the continue option, you won't be able to setup a new device, or sync to the servers. Those are the primary purposes that Kobo intends for the WiFi. I think this is only the second time that I have seen the servers used for this down.

No, I wasn't able to use it until today when their page was up again.

Another problem is that I logged out from Kobo and I suddenly wasn't able to even read any of my books already on my reader. The readerrebooted and I was told to register again. But since the page was down, I couldn't register and was stuck on the registration page. If I didn't had access to wifi I was asked to connect to computer through USB and download the kobo app to register through it. But since the page was down, I couldn't download or register through my laptop neither.

This made me think. What happens if I am registered and everything works fine, but I have to do a reset or get logged out in a place where I don't have internet connection? I have been out sailing or hiking where there are no connection. Then I will not be able to register again and therefore not read my already sideloaded books or, in case of a reset, sideload them again and continue reading. The obligation to register and be logged in to be able to use the reader for just reading the existing books is a huge mistake.

I agree that it's a huge mistake, but I don't see Kobo changing that anytime soon. They want people to use the Kobo store as often as possible, and that's the easiest way to make that happen.

That said, in the case of a reset, since you would be side-loading books anyway, that necessarily means you'd have a computer with you. If you had saved the instructions locally, you could go through the process of tricking the Kobo into thinking you'd completed registration (if I recall correctly, it's as simple as using the command line to insert a row into a sqlite3 database table). That would give you the ability to read side-loaded books without registering.

Or keep a copy of the database from the device and restore it when needed. It will need some catch-up for the books added or removed, but, it should work.

It's not a big deal, but a little annoying.

I usually don't bring a laptop when hiking or sailing, so I store a backup of thing on my phone or usb memory. Then I use an OTG cable so I can plug in memory, reader etc to the phone.
