From your image it looks like the file name is being truncated so that the end is lost, including the ".azw3" extension. I don't have a Mac, but when I download the free sample of that book in Windows it comes down with the rather long file name of:

A Furious Sky_ The Five-Hundred-Year History of America's Hurricanes.azw3

Perhaps you could try renaming the file after download, before importing it into calibre.

Added: You should also check the size of the downloaded file to see if it is in the right ballpark. If not, you could try using a different web browser for the download.

Barbara, thanks I was not aware of the 7 day policy. I will do that after I give JHowell’s idea a try. Thanks to both of you!

Jhowell,
You nailed it. After adding the .azw3 extension to the file name everything worked as advertised! I hope you are on the Amazon payroll as you saved them a bundle in potential lost sales.
On a side note, it took me a long time to complete this test. I made the mistake of including Barbara’s Harvard Classics. It must have taken 10 minutes to load to Calibre and about the same to download to my Kobo Forma! That is the largest eBook I have ever downloaded!
Thanks, once again the Mobile Read community comes through!
