Jon - the OP already did that, see post 12, you may not have seen it because the post was in moderation.

@crisco111 - try running calibre with no plugins: calibre --ignore-plugins

See calibre command

That will disable the de-DRM plugin, so add something that's not DRM infected.

Do you have Alf's latest de-DRM plugin?

- add a Restart in Safe Mode option that does the --ignore-plugins trick.

BR

Where do I tell calibre to ignore the plugins? And so far it hasn't been a problem hanging up trying to deDRM because I can't even get it to go as far as a directory to choose a book -- it doesn't even let me select the directory!!

With calibre not running, at the command line (or in the [Winkey+R] box) type:

calibre --ignore-plugins

press Enter.

Also, try drag dropping the book into the book list, that should skip the file system dialogues.

Tried the ignore-plugins but no more luck. My stuff from Alf is a few years old and I can update that, but right now I can't get calibre to even look at a directory!

Things to check
  • Reboot windows make sure you do not have a hung update.
  • Reboot windows in safe mode
  • Check and make sure that you are the owner of the calibre library and you have read/write permissions.

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions and help.

I updated Alf's plugins and lo and behold, seems like everything is working again!

I really appreciated all the suggestions and patience with my questions -- it can be a real struggle being a crazy old lady with limited computer knowledge (aided by a crazy old man with none!!) -- cheers to all -- and stay healthy!!!

I will admit to having the same issue. For me the option of setting CALIBRE_NO_NATIVE_FILEDIALOGS worked like a charm. (And yes.. this is Windows 10 / 64 bit / 2004 with several versions of calibre and just the built in a/v).

I'm having the same problem. Started a week or so ago. How do you set Calibre to run the no native filedialogs option. I'm on Win 10. Thanks

This is from the page linked in the second post - https://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000549.htm

Please note that the solution on this thread was to update to the latest version of the plugin not setting an environment variable.

Tried to follow instructions on that page, but I got lost. Not sure what to put where once I get to the Environmental Variables screen. How do I find the Calibre path and change it, and change to what exactly. Thanks. No experience doing stuff like this.

BTW, my workaround to adding books to Calibre is to use windows Open With command on the epub file and direct it to the calibre.exe command file. The question is, what happened a week or two ago that made Calibre suddenly unhappy after working flawlessly for years and years?

@rmbelson

Are you using the DeDRM plugin like the OP was? And if so is it up to date? It should be at version 6.8.

if you really want to set up the variable then the second post gives you it's name and its value. Just click the "new" button on the Environment Variables page as the link explains and add the new name as per the second post and its value of 1. No need for anything else.

But I repeat, do you have the IDENTICAL issue with the DeDRM plugin and if so have you updated that?

As to what has changed? Did you upgrade Calibre but forgot to check that all the plugins were updated too? Or did Windows upgrade itself? Modern software is complicated so any moving part can cause issues when there is a change.
