That was my thinking. OTOH, I can see a time when Amazon is going to decide it's time to stop supporting content for their older devices. After all, Amazon has already dropped firmware updates for several generations of ereaders.

Well hopefully there will continue to be enough people who for whatever reason don't have wifi and need a computer to download their books. At my local library the public computers are always busy.

How does the de-DRM plugin get the key in order to remove the DRM when you do it that way?

Wow! I did NOT know that would work. Thank you for the tip. I now have a backup plan. I think I will still use the Windows app for the time being since it makes it easy to download dozens at once and then Calibre can pick them up all at once. But for one or two at a time, that works fine.

Well, maybe not. I went back into the Amazon site and downloaded a book I bought long ago that had an update. By downloading it from the web site it does not de-DRM properly. I downloaded it via the Windows app and all went as I expected.

When I downloaded, I did choose the correct device and I tried several times.

I don't know if the DeDRM stuff will work with multiple keys but I think their web site explains how to set it up for this method. On your Kindle you go to its settings and in there is its serial number which is essentially the key/password for DeDRM.

You need the serial number from a Kindle eInk ereader that is registered to your Amazon account. The serial number is used as the key for decryption so you'll need to enter it in the deDRM plugin configuration. Without the registered device, the Download and transfer via USB will be greyed out.

I tested this a couple of times after purchasing and registering the Kindle. The K4PC app is handier but suspenders and belt never hurts.

Wow, it has been so long since I first configured things I had totally forgotten about entering the serial number into the plugin. Age is catching up to me...

I'm a geezer and remember when my computer's ram was measured in kilobytes and the disks were single digit megabytes. So even though I have gobs of ram and disk I still fret about installing unnecessary apps that I rarely, if ever, use.

Hell, I can still recognize 300, 1200, 2400, 4800, 9,600 baud connections just from the sound. My first hard drives were 10MB MFM and then we got those HUGE 40MB RLL disks!

In Core (Memory) we trust.
Memory was measured in WORDS that it supported (8, 12, 16 bits) until some marketing type found that Bytes gave a bigger (but honest) number.

(Same happened with TV screens. They used to be measured Across until the Diagonal advertising hit )

Or, just as likely, "Bus error", from accessing a "word" with an odd address.

I just bought my first Kobo book and was able to successfully de-DRM it and convert to AZW3 for my Kindle. I think I'll still get the Kobo for Christmas though.

Btw, is there any format that carries things like bookmarks internally so you can move them back and forth between the PC and devices?

For books bought from Amazon, the bookmarks and notes will automatically sync to all devices and apps. For books not bought from Amazon, the sync will happen if you email the books to your Kindle account.

If you sideload the books using USB, the bookmarks and notes will not sync, unfortunately.
