Maybe... but while continuous activity on the screen, it becomes fast again... Maybe a controller problem?

I wouldn't be worried about the lifespan of the screen, more of the battery itself. I got an old Mini in here and it still works perfectly.

I had a K2 that was still working perfectly a year ago when I traded it in on a new Paperwhite. The battery life was maybe 8 hours, but the device functioned perfectly. It was my first Kindle, bought in November of 2009.
