No one said it'd be difficult. As it is now it's a feature that sets apart newer devices from older devices. Thus creating an incentive to upgrade.

Also, because the browser is better, it allows me to download from certain sites (Kobo and Google Books, for example) that I can't download from with the Tolino (the PocketBook supports the "triple dot menu" needed for downloading — I can't get the Tolinos to do that). I haven't experimented with all sites, but (at this point) I think the PocketBook can download and open DRM ePubs from any site that sells them. And it definitely works with Overdrive.
I did look at one Pocketbook that's a current model and the latest firmware has the current version of RMSDK.

You already have a Kobo. Kobo is looking to add features to the newer Readers to get people to buy them or for owners of older Kobo to upgrade. We are lucky that Kobo still continue to support older readers like they do. heck, Amazon has EOLed the PW3 and it's not that old.

Yes Jon that’s rather my point. My first Kobo device doesn’t have overdrive support. I don’t complain about it not being added because it wasn’t a feature being advertised at the time nor as a coming soon thing. Rakuten didn’t even own OD at the time.

That's good to hear. Another couple (three) things I like about the PocketBook. It allows you to count pages by screen (if you like that) or use set page numbers (which is what I like). You can also lock the screen and just use the buttons – for those who don't like touch screens. You can also choose to display no page numbers or header or anything (see attachment). This is how I normally use the PocketBook. It has more font size gradations than the Tolino, but less than the Kobo and fonts can only be displayed in normal, italic(?), and bold (not "thicker" like the Nook, but bold). Which isn't a big deal for me because I use Constantia and I like its normal face.

Having the latest RMSDK on the Reader is enticing. It would give the best of both worlds that you don't get from Kobo. You would get the better typesetting and better ePub 3 compatibility.

How well does Pocketbook handle series? How good is the eBook management?

Sorry, I'm the wrong person to ask. My eBook "management" (so to speak) comes down to load (or download from Overdrive or a bookstore) and read. The PocketBook does have a Series tab in its Library drop-down but I've never used it (nor do I know how to use it). See attachment (don't know how much help it will be).

OK, I'm getting really frustrated with my Kobo Aura HD and/or Overdrive, Adobe Digital Editions. I tried just about anything, and I still cannot open a Library eBook on my Kobo.
I factory reset the Kobo several times, I even opened new Adobe and Kobo accounts, I downloaded new library books, and I still cannot open them.
Any suggestions as to what I might be doing wrong?

The device.xml file is specific to the device but the activation.xml file was the same on all my devices. Now when I reset my Kobos, I put a saved copy of the activation.xml file in the .adobe-digital-editions directory and ADE happily says my Kobo is authorized. No need for re-authorization for quite a few years now.

As long as ADE is able to download the library ebook and my Kobo shows as authorized, I haven't seen any issues with library books not opening on my Kobos.

As usual, YMMV.
OK, I finally was able to transfer A book to my Kobo and open it. I immediately backed up the folder which you recommended. Is this confirmed that now I should not have issues in the future if I hold on to these files and I always sign it to the same Adobe account?

That's how it works for me. Considering that my Adobe account is linked to an email that hasn't existed in 17 years, it might be a bit of a pain to do much with it. This assumes that if (perhaps, that should be when) your copy of ADE goes out to lunch, it must be re-authorized to that same account.

So what should I do once I get the message again on my Kobo that it can't open the library book? Just overwrite the file in the ADE directory on the Kobo and it should work?

Check the authorization in ADE for the email and Adobe ID (it's that urn:uuid:hex number string. Compare that to the urn:uuid at the beginning of the activation.xml file and further down for the email address. If they match, you should be okay to go.

Please note that you will have to download the book with ADE and sideload it to your Kobo from ADE. Simply copying the book from the My Digital Editions directory to your Kobo is not recommended.

There is a way to get OD books onto your Aura HD, but you’ll need a second (newer) Kobo as well. If you’re signed in to your Kobo account on a Kobo with OD support, any books you borrow on that will also sync to your older Kobo(s) and indeed to the Kobo apps too. I discovered this to my pleasant surprise—after borrowing a book on my Libra, the book also appeared on my Glo HD and in the apps.

I got a newer Clara and set up Overdrive on it... Now when I borrow a library book it also syncs wirelessly to my Aura HD, making it MUCH easier to load library books on my older, larger-screen device (which I still prefer around the house). Just a thought, if you can get a deal on a newer device that has Overdrive built-in... Definitely reduces a lot of the headache!
