3G in the USA will be gone most likely by 2023. As for using 4G/5G, most phones and most provider allow creating a hotspot so that can be used with any Reader to get a WiFi connection to download/sync.

About the only thing I can think of that makes syncing Kobo devices harder is that they don't have 3G or 4G support. The devices will only sync over WiFi, or via the desktop app.

I've read Kobo books using all these methods, multiple e-ink devices, Android app on my phone, iOS app on my iPad, Windows desktop app. The sync happens seamlessly as I swapped between them.
The sync only happens seamlessly for books purchased from Kobo. With Amazon, I send all of my books not purchased from Amazon via send to kindle, and they sync among all of my devices. Everything syncs...seamlessly. Reading position, notes, highlights. As mentioned above, my notes and highlights are able to be exported easily with the "notebook" feature, for both Amazon purchased books and those purchased elsewhere that are transferred via send to kindle.

I keep a 3g Kindle Voyage in my purse, and am able to sync it with the Kindle that I leave at home whenever I need to. If I am somewhere without my purse, I will always have my phone, and can sync to that if needed. Again, this works for *any* of my books, whether purchased from Amazon or not.

I do read on my Kobo sometimes, but not very often, because I don't generally like to be reading multiple books at a time. I keep it because it has a gorgeous screen, and I keep hoping that Kobo will someday allow syncing of books that are not purchased from them. Until then, unfortunately, it will always be relegated to second best, for me.

The new paperwhite is too similar at 6", bluish backlight and no buttons.

The Kindle Oasis is a bit pricy at 300 euros, but if it's awesome, maybe it's the right device.

Thus, I looked at a few alternatives;
Kobo Libra H2O, 7", €140
PocketBook InkPad 3, 7.8", €180
Kobo Forma, 8", €245
Maybe there's something more I should check out?

I have no idea how these compare quality wise. Since I don't use much functionality, I care about that the screen quality is good, the backlight is uniform and that the device feels somewhat quick.

So, Sniglom, what did you do in the end?
