If it's any help, I add a space to each side of the <br /> and then remove them afterwards. Very often I use them with centered text and the extra spaces at either side don't help.

One cannot treat tags in general as whitespace, think for example of some<span>thing</span> it could be argued it is safe to do so for a few tags like <p>,<br>,<div>,<hr> etc but their behavior can b overriden by CSS as well.
