I guess you aren't using covers then, since ebooks don't need to be protected from the elements.

The way I look at a shelf is that you can only have one book on one shelf and that doesn't work.
Really? I look at my bookshelves in the basement and there are over 100 books on each shelf. Neatly organized by author/series and dusted every 3 months or so.

But you can't have the same book on multiple shelves.

Wanna bet? I have several books where I own more than one pbook copy. Then I have my autographed copies where for the most part I have duplicate copies. I literally had to bleed for some of those autographs. Sadly most of the authors who autographed books for me are no longer with us.

Ok, prove it. You take one physical book and put that same book (no other copies) on two different shelves.

If I put a copy of Stranger in a Strange Land (hard cover 1st edition) and a second copy of Stranger in a Strange Land (hard cover 1st edition) on two different shelves, I will invite you to tell the difference with the naked eye. There may be two physical copies but even the most dedicated of hairsplitters is going to have issues arguing that they are not the same book. Perhaps you would like to argue that a copy of an ebook on my Forma is not the same book as the identical file on my XYL's Libra H2O?

Jon, you might want to reread what you posted. They are poking fun at you because you basically stated "a shelf can only have one book", not "a book can only be on one shelf"

See, you cannot do it because you need two physical copies of the book. Collections are for eBooks where you can have the same one eBook in multiple collections.

Computing is full of words for things that are basically metaphors. Icon, folder, directory, desktop, menu, file. All these things have "real" equivalents, sometimes quite different in the way the behave. We tend to forget this as they're been around long enough such that the computer version is a legitimate meaning of the word itself n not just a convenient metaphor. For file and icon they might even be the primary meaning now.

Picking the right metaphor can help people use it. Shelves/collections is a good example. When ereaders were less common, using a book related metaphor like shelf was probably thought to be more helpful.

Anyway it's not worth getting too pedantic over.

Moon reader uses Shelves - which actually look like wooden shelves
and I am pretty sure you can add a book to multiple Shelves,

I'm not much of a fan of the fake bookshelf look.

I actually prefer the fake shelf in Moon to the awful list based options in calibre companion

I have yet to explore using multiple shelves, but a single shelf holds more than enough books to be getting on with. and the size of the thumbnails is customisable - with my settings I get up to 3 rows of 10 books.
