I would prefer it if Bookeen would put it in a more accessible place instead of having to go to the go-to-page-box.......

Well, I can (and I know I'm almost alone with it) see why they prefer to have the bar instead of the pagenumbers - as the bar represents a percentage-value and therefore really is independent from fontsizes it's the only thing close to an accurate position in your book you can get. I do though understand why people want the pagenumbers nontheless.

The only time I miss it is when I do an update (like correcting typos) while in the middle of a book and I have to try & error to find again where I was.

You can parse the html code and get a more accurate progress bar. Now they count header text for example which lead to the inaccurate progress bar for short html files with large headers.

I think what most people want to have is some number. It do not have to be page number. Now it is really very hard to do things like reading 1/10 of the book. And some people like to be able to do these kind of things.

They could have both, a bar and a pair of numbers "42/327", even if the numbers are not real page numbers, but just estimated page numbers.

Now, the problem is what to do when the estimated page numbers are not accurate. Say the estimated page number is 327 but the real page number (the number of pages you have to skip to reach the end) is 350. I'd have no problem with the current "page number" not changing after pressing the "next page" button, so I would have two screens showing "page 42". That's certainly better than increasing the page number for every turn and enventually reaching page 330 of 327

I tend to agree with you, but an indication of the total length of the book would be useful information. One can obtain the total number of pages from the "Goto Page xxx" dialog, but it would be useful if it were to be also displayed at the end of the progress bar.

This page number debate has gone on and on. I'll admit, changing over from paper books to electronic books required some adjustments and I missed my page numbers, but now, after a year of reading on the Cybook, I can honestly say I don't miss page numbers at all. The graphical bar on the bottom on the page is good enough for me.

page numbers , progress bar

I have used Mobi on Palm and Win CE, and have seen both progress bar and page number. Page number have always been available for the last 10 years. Cybook may be newish, but mobi has been around for many years.

If the cybook re sets, or for some reason you lose your place, have you tried to find your place again using the progress bar. Fat chance. You can get a lot closer with page numbers.

I tend to lose my place where I have not left a book mark. My first book reader was a WinCE device back in early 2000.

There were many software readers at the time, but from day one, I liked mobi, but even then mobi were slow to respond to customers.

Compaq Aero, Palm 105, Sony Clie, Toshiba e400 and last but not least a zodiac. Now my cybook and treo phone.

Yes, Mobipocket does sort of have page numbers. But the page numbers are buggy. Mobipocket has never bothered to fix this. All versions have the same page number bug and seems like they always will. You can use the goto page feature on the Gen3, but there is no grantee that the page you end up at is the page you went to last time you tried to go to that same page number. This is not Bookeen's fault. The fault lies with Mobipocket.

This is still a property of the format and that they want to have page number and not a bug in the program.

The point here was that even if it is not exact it is much easier to use the inexact page number to find were you where in the book then using the progress bar.

Given the problems with inconsistent numbering, I simply don't find this true with Mobipocket software on other devices.

The Kindle's "location" system does work for this purpose, though.

How can you claim that it is not easier? Did you really understood what I said?

Apparently not.

My point was that displaying the problematic page numbers has never helped me on other Mobi Readers (desktop/PDA).

If you want to go to one of these page numbers, the Cybook allows you to do that -- even if it does not display them. And I am just fine with that.

If you one more time read what I wrote you see that I talked about finding the place in the book were you stopped reading if the place is lost for some reason. It was not a question of going to a specific page number. So I really do not get your comments.
