Personally I do not give a damn about anyone tracking what I read on a ebook reader. If you are that paranoid about such then get a Sony T series reader as nobody supports it any more and the screen on the T3 is basically identical to the Kindle PW2 screen, still plenty useable. It also supports photos and has a handwritten notes and drawings support capability. Get one with the lighted cover and it works great and the light runs off the reader internal battery. Maybe not as even illumination as a front lighted internal LED illuminated screen but it works. I have two of them with the lighted covers. Even with the lighted cover it is my lightest and smallest 6" reader with cover, comparable in size and weight to the 5" readers with cover. Also takes a micro SD or SDHC card up to 32 GB. With no remaining support then side loading books is required.
Once registered a Kindle or Kobo reader can be put in airplane mode and left there and it can never report what you read if you are willing to side load all your books. |

I had a Franklin ebookman device that used dot matrix type letters (not e-ink) like the screen for a calculator and ran on 2 batteries (I can't recall if it was AA or AAA). Each set of batteries lasted maybe 4 hours max. It was the size of a pack of playing cards or maybe just a bit larger. Eventually Franklin (the company that made it) stopped developing the reader software (a port of mobipocket) and I ended up having to look for something else to read on.

WiFi can be off. I've not heard of any major ereader with GPS or RFID. Few have Bluetooth and it can be off. I've five makes/brands of ereader and only one (Amazon) needs a real email address to set it up. You can skip address & payment card if you have a US marketplace $1 gift voucher sent to that email address. So you are blowing up the tracking way out of proportion compared to Google's Android, Microsoft, Apple and Adobe. There is no need even on the Kindle to ever turn on Wifi after registration, and no need ever for the Bluetooth (only most recent models and only needed for Audible) as phone with an App will manage Audible books better and more portably. Also GPS can't track you, ever. It's only used as data by an OS or application that does "call home" via Cellular or WiFi. It's multiple receivers. Tracking via WiFi is easily blocked by your router and avoided by turning off WiFi. RFID is very very short range, unless someone has a giant aerial in canvas sided truck. Bluetooth is very short range and hard to use for tracking. Turn it off if not using it. Generally SW switches for WiFi, Mobile and Bluetooth are obvious if lying, the power consumption on a portable device is significant. It's true that Google, Facebook etc have lied about location tracking, but not about turning off Bluetooth, WiFi or Mobile. That's too obviously detected. Also a Kobo only needs a FAKE email address to register and never needs WiFi ever again. So tracking isn't an issue for ereaders AT ALL, only ebooks bought from Amazon or others directly on the ereader. You can still buy Amazon ebooks and download to PC and never turn on WiFi or 3G, if you registered the ereader. Adobe does track use of their DRM (sales or library). So the only tracking issue is buying books and the real issue there is the DRM, not the ereader. This project does nothing at all to address that. Last edited by Quoth; 05-06-2020 at 04:24 AM. Being able to mitigate an issue does not mean there is no issue.
Also, there is no need to turn wifi on to fake register a kobo. |

Faking the Kobo reg without Wifi needs editing the database. A once off WiFi use just needs an imaginary email address. It's not tracking to know the IP address once, which only sometimes identifies your city. Unless you are Google or Facebook. |

I've had several devices that don't work anymore for lack of attention. I don't want this to happen to my next eReader if possible. I've found that the stuff that had an open source project associated with them(my Samsung S3), or at least knowledgeable people (my Alphasmart), continued to be usable. THAT'S my main motivation. I've had enough of working devices going into landfill and _that's_ my main motivation here. For me, it's about reliability I don't get with commercial products. I can't find that 4.3" screen reader on ebay? I'm in China so if there's something cheap and rubbish out there I might take a risk. The HiSense A5 could be switched to airplane mode but this is 5". This is the same size as my phone and it might be handy as an experiment to reduce phone addiction but a bit of a waste not to actually use it as a phone. The inability to use Google Play ties in well with that addiction angle. Good to know the Ectaco uses AA batteries but 4 is heavy. I noticed a heated debate about pdf/ebook broke out. It looks like a one person sees the word ebook in a different way to the other. One guy seems to see the word as more like a wide concept of electronic+book and the other sees it more as a file format/tech concept. Thanks for sharing that info about the Z22. It was a bit of a long shot to be able to use that device anyway. Let's talk about small screens for a moment. What is it exactly that makes it uncomfortable? Do you think it's needing to scan more lines? I heard line searching is one of the slowest aspects of reading. A smaller screen has shorter lines. If you need to jump from the right side of the screen to the left side of the screen, that sucks. It might be easier to read with a ruler, or even faster. Can that be improved? Or maybe for a really small screen it's best to go with speedreading: https://opensource.com/article/19/8/...ng-open-source ...though this prevents pausing to contemplate that maybe makes reading more thoughtful than listening to an audiobook? Personally, my eyes often track back in the text to look at something again, or more rarely look forward to see what is coming up. I've read somewhere that that is fairly common, that most of us don't just read the text linearly from start to finish. A very small screen limits that kind of roaming more than a larger screen. That's the most important limitation of small screens to me. Again, personally, I find that a 6" screen works well for me. I occasionally have to go back a page to re-read some text, but only a few times per novel.

One of the things I like about the A5 is it's more like reading newspaper columns than a book (thinner, longer aspect than a typical e-reader). The optimal line length for body text readability is considered to be 50-60. To reach this on bigger devices I need larger type than I really need.
Smaller screens usually means more page turning. But page turning on the 5" A5 volume rocker is better than screen tapping on my 8" Nova 2. I prefer the A5 for ebooks, the Nova for PDFs/Manga/Graphic Novels. |

I like my 6 inch readers and at the font size I read, they have about the right amount of text on the page for me.
I haven't ever seen a 5 inch reader in person. I found an old review that shows a Kobo Mini and a Kobo Glo side by side - i was surprised at how big the difference was. https://the-gadgeteer.com/2013/09/04...eaders-review/ |

Here is the 4.3" 800 x 600.
Seems like the German 5" model sold years ago. No touch. https://www.ebay.com/itm/4-3inch-8GB...0/174196948129 Order at your own risk. Seems overpriced. Assume 4 to 8 weeks shipping if in Europe or North America and many countries will charge Duty then Sales Tax at customs. Likely no Wifi or Bluetooth, probably USB only and buttons to navigate. |
