No correction needed. Kobo does not lock down their ereaders so you can modify the firmware without needing to jump through hoops while hoping the hoops will not be taken away in the next firmware revision. Want to revert to an earlier firmware revision? No problems (if you jump back too many versions, the database may not be happy and don't go back before the factory version for your model). Bricked your Kobo playing with the firmware? Check the factory restore option for your model. Want to use KOReader or Plato? Check for the one click install packages.

Amazon's Kindle ereaders have their advantages but I prefer a more open system.

Thanks for the confirmation. I wasn't really successful in finding concrete info regarding Kobo readers. I didn't do my due diligence while buying Kindle PW3 and I am now stuck with no SW jailbreak. But Kobo had shut shop here about 3 years back so it would have been difficult to arrange for one what with high customs duties and shipping charges. Same goes for Boyue/Onyx readers. At that time the Kobo Glo? was being sold off for a mere $30. While I tried to make a decision it went OOS. Nearly 4 years later I finally had purchased a dedicated ereader. Other than the draconian software restrictions pretty happy with the Kindle so far.

Don't look at it as restrictions that are going to limit your simple enjoyment of reading a book. Just be happy that it does what it does now, and don't expect it to be doing any new tricks in the future. Give it a few books, maybe tinker around with the settings until you find a setting (font, size, etc.) that will allow you to read for hours without the urge to change anything. Give it a few more books trial period. Still happy? If the answer is "yes," finish ten more books. Now judge the Kindle again, and consider keeping it or upgrading it.

Yes. Keeping the Kindle for a few years at least. Maybe by that time devices with the Mobius screen would be more widespread and/or cheaper. A big issue currently with the Kindle is the very limited support for Indian language fonts. Extracting the requisite font from Windows didn't help. I used to read on my Android devices in Moon+ Reader all these years and I could tweak pretty much anything. So the current Kindle software is a jarring change. Still just having a dedicated reading device makes for a very nice experience.
