What part of "optional" are you having trouble with? The book you imported does not have the metadata you seem to be expecting to be there. I've seen books with excellent metadata and others that had the mandatory elements and not one byte more.

Here's a recent purchase's metadata.opf as shown by calibre's editor:

About the only human meaningful part of this is the title (with Amazon's habit of stuffing the series into the title) and the author. Strangely, that's what showed in the details pane. calibre can't add what isn't present.

Yes, I assumed they were added on the same date, but at different times.

Did you add the same file?
Did you add/update an any plugins between the two adds
Did you get the Duplicate book warning on the second add?

I was hoping jhowell (resident Amazon/Kindle guru) might know where the odd 'text' in Comments came from.

What I was wondering about is the second book in the screenshot. The one that shows as published Mar. 2020 but has 30 Apr 20... in the date column. See the attached snippet where I circled the two values.

Perhaps he is planning on adding the book on the 30th?

I had nothing better to do and The Complete Robot Empire did offer a free sample so I downloaded it.

I found it rather amusing that the "This is where I have to type some letters to fulfil the requirement to type" description is in the book in the <dc:description>. See the metadata from calibre's editor opening the azw3 file. So it appears that toolman got exactly the metadata in the book, nothing more, nothing less.

It looks like a placeholder that someone entered and then forgot to update. I can see someone creating the book doing that. But, are you saying all the books you add to calibre have this in the comments? The only way I can think that would happen is if the template used when adding the book sets the comments to this. What does the "Adding books" page of the preferences look like? Do you have the "Read metadata from file content rather than file name" option selected? This was mentioned early in the thread, but, I don't see a response from you.

As an experiment, take one of the books with bad metadata after the import. Then populate it with something. It doesn't matter what, just set it to something different than what it was imported with. Then do a "Save to disk". That will create a copy of the book with the updated metadata. Then, delete the book in the library and add the save-to-disk copy. What does the metadata look like? Is it what you entered?

It's in the ebook's metadata. Perhaps the author's has a weird sense of humour? When I imported the sample, my results were the same as toolman's first screenshot.
