I'd not buy DRMed ebooks from Kobo:
Quote:
Compatibility notes:
Kobo Desktop is not compatible with Linux OS, Windows XP, or Windows Vista.
Minimum requirements for Mac users: OSX 10.9 (Mavericks) or later.
Though Rakuten's Viber does have a Linux version.

Also I don't want books locked to one brand of ereader, or a particular instance.

Sometimes Amazon is the only alternative to Smashwords. Because the Big 5 publishers have lost the plot, at least currently, when you can download to PC and can use the registered Kindle's serial number in Calibre.

I edited your message, so if I lost your point, I apologize.

But why wouldn't Kobo also be a viable alternative to Smashwords when looking for Big 5 books?

I buy from Amazon, so I'm not criticizing your choice. Just wondering why one is out and the other is not? Both seem equally locked in to their brand of ereader.

Odd. Kobo's DRMed books can either be downloaded from their web site and fed through ADE or they can be synced to a Kobo ereader or app. If you use the Kobo Desktop application on PC or Mac, you can use OBOK to remove DRM. As usual, once they are in calibre, conversion and sending to an ereader is trivial.

So I fail to see where you are locked to one brand of ereader or "particular instance" by purchasing from Kobo.

I do wonder about mentioning Linux and then continuing on to mention using the Kindle app since there is no Kindle app for Linux which makes your download to PC and use the registered serial number for removing DRM a bit useless. Admittedly, my experience using Kindle for PC/Wine was not very positive so I do not consider it a viable workaround.

I don't run windows, so can't install the Kobo application. Yet the Parent company supports Linux for other applications. I don't think ADE works natively either. I last used it on XP, ages ago.
I don't need to install any Amazon application to buy an ebook from Amazon (selecting my Kindle as target for PC download). Then I can read the ebook on my Sony PRS350 or Kobo Libra via Calibre.
I have backups of all my ebooks from all sources.
It's a shame that Kobo is trying to copy the company with 90% of the market, but doing it in a way that's worse, accidentally really in the case of Amazon.

Other places to keep an eye on are HumbleBundle (https://www.humblebundle.com/books/), StoryBundle (https://storybundle.com/) and Bundle of Holding (https://www.bundleofholding.com/). BoH is mostly RPGs, but they have occasional fiction bundles. SB is mostly indie authors, but they sometimes have award bundles or Open Road bundles. HB seems mostly geek-related non-fiction, but do comics, RPGs and some fiction.

Kobo and Google Play.

As others note, if it has DRM, you'll need to learn about and use Adobe Digital Editions for both of those stores. Check the bottom of the ebook page on Kobo, it will tell you what kind of file.
If it does not have DRM, then you can simply download off their sites.

Also, since you already have an amazon eink device, you CAN download ebook files from the site using Transfer to USB method (which gives you a downloaded file - you don't actually need a kindle attached to the computer to use this function). Add to Calibre as normal, you don't need to use your paperwhite for files.

You ARE technically set up to get files from amazon, if your paperwhite is registered to your amazon account.

Not what you're asking I know, but it's the simplest way.

Depending on what you're looking for, the publisher's site might also be an option, a lot of smaller publishers sell DRM-free versions of their ebooks.

If you want to bypass ADE, you can download Sony for PC software and use that to open your books. Once you do that, you tell Calibre to go into the My Books folder/Reader Folder and find the book you just got and upload it to Calibre for disinfection.

Here is the link for the Sony software.

Then you cannot buy any eBooks that have DRM ass there are no native Linux apps to deal with eBooks with DRM.

I think that's a really bad idea. Sony could be using an older version of RMSDK (older then 2.0.1) and 2.0.1 is the earliest version that works properly. Besides, Sony has no natiove Linux version.

Indeed the Sony SW is on an old XP box somewhere. It's also horrible. The XP also has a prehistoric Calibre. I'm not sure if it even goes. Amazon books targeting my PW3m and Downloaded to PC (Linux laptop) are fine without an Amazon application.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't you have to install ADE in order to make the plugins work on infested epubs? Is there now a version of ADE that runs natively in Linux?

Gotta love it when you don't want from Amazon yet you run Linux and do not want to try to install non-native programs for other format eBooks.

The thing to do is to dual-boot with Windows 10 and then you can install ADE 2.0.1 natively.
