I think it's fair to assume that if you're sending data to a computer system that you don't control, that whoever controls that computer system might be keeping a copy of it.

And there's no way to synchronize progress in a book between devices without that happening anyway.

That said, the detail of the data collected in this case seems to be a bit... excessive.

Well, they tell me how many days I have read in a month now. Its a new thing on my kindle home page. I assume they could give me a lot more stats than that. How many pages did I read this month, or week.
I get recommendations based on what I read, not just what I bought. I get emails after I finish a book telling me what I might like after reading it.

I like all the stats and tracking. I have goodreads linked so it shows everything I read there. All my ratings go somewhere. They probably know exactly when and how much in a day I read. They know how fast I read. Wasn't that a thing with Kindle unlimited so they could tell if you fly through the book for scamming?

Honestly, amazon tracking my kindles and reading habits is the least of my personal worries.
I use google and my browser is synced over my devices. There is probably more worrisome stuff going on on that front.

I have always assumed kindles call home with all kinds of data.
I like the convenience of having it all in one place so I am willing to not worry about it too much.

I guess those that use kindles in airplane mode only, also use their computers in some incognito mode? Or VPN at all times? What about apps on a phone. banking, social media, GPS.

I am concerned about my eyes and if they hopefully can stay operational one enough so I can read all the darn books. Every single one of them.
I don't care if they know when or how or what I read to be honest.

Where do you see that? Is it on your Kindle, or on the Amazon web site?

I think you need to enable FreeTime on the device. It's part of the Parental Controls.

No need for parental controls. I don't have anything like that turned on. Its just a feature. There are a lot more stats in the android app. I get a daily reading streak gong back to July 2018. And a weekly streak going back to same month.

I get a chart with days read per month, and other stuff. They even incorporate how many books I have read so far. Don't know yet if its the same as I have on goodreads but doesn't look that way. All you have to do is mark them as read, which I have it set to do automatically. It is all under "more" in the app under Reading Insights.

I get something on my kindle too. It is not as detailed. It just gives me a monthly run down on I think how many days I read. i can't recall now as its not always there. Its in the home view page on the kindle, the first 2 pages you get before the library. I only read on my kindles and only use the app to check out recs or books on sale and such things as I get notifications. I don't read on my phone.

So both, app and kindles for me. Just much more data on app.

Are you asking about on the kindle or the app.

I can't take a pic of it on the kindle, because unlike the app, on the kindle those pages change all the time. And the bit about reading days per month are only when the month is over. I think I see it the first few days of the new month. I think it was just telling me how many days in the last months I read. Not as detailed as the app.

On the Kindle itself, but it's no big deal. It's just not something I've ever seen, but I use the List view for the home page, and didn't see anything like you described when I changed the Home screen view.

Out of curiosity, I submitted a request for all my data on Jan 31st and haven't received it yet. I'm not sure if they just delay as much as possible, or if substantial human intervention is involved. The latter seems unlikely given their ability to quickly accumulate and process huge amounts of data, it seems like something they should be able to spit out almost immediately.

It doesn't matter if you use list view or covers. You have to turn on the "Home Screen View" in the settings under device options. There you get the currently reading, reading lists, recommendations, next book in series to download, based on your reading, editors picks, etc. It changes what you see. And it depends on what you use. Like I get show whats on my amazon wishlists where I add books to them.

If I can catch it the start of next month, I'll take a picture of it. Unlike the app, its not something I can pull up at anytime on the kindle. they kind of rotate through what they show on those 2 pages on the home view.

Ok...I found it on the app on my phone, I had to go to "MORE -> Reading Insights" and then it showed me the statistics. I wish it would show me hours read per day. I know that I read every day...that was never a question. I'd also like to know things like that average amount of time it takes to read a book, etc.

I agree, I would like more stats. I would like them on my kindle though as I only read there. Don't want to have to go to the app just to check those numbers.

That's what I meant. I see the Reading Insights option in the Kindle app on my iPhone, but it's not current at all, I guess because I don't mark books as completed, and don't use Good Reads. I'm not that interested in stats, but it is interesting that these options are available for those who like them. I'd never looked into any of them before.
