My only thought is the water resistant coating has deteriorated and the water was shorting things out, but over time it has dried out - has anyone else got any knowledge about whether that's a possibility? As I do most of my reading in the bath (I am a reincarnated Golgafrincham Captain it seems!) I think that seems likely!

Unless otherwise specified, most tests are carried out at temperatures between 15 and 35 degrees Celsius (60 to 95 Fahrenheit). Higher temperatures in places like saunas, steam rooms and hot tubs could damage the device. For example, the Pebble has been tested to work within the temperature range of -10 to 60 degrees C (14 to 140 F).
So it sounds like it's possible that the heat/humidity/steam caused a problem with the waterproofing.

For what it's worth, I think that the water inside the Aura One took longer to evaporate than you expected. The one time I looked at an Aura One that that had been submerged by one of my nephews, we removed the back cover and left it to dry for 24 hours before trying to turn it back on.
I had been reading it in the bath, and there was a moist atmosphere but did manage to avoid dunking it

Nope hasnt been submerged in about a year (when I nearly fell asleep in the bath and dropped it lol!) .....But yeah obviously some water was in it - I guessed the quantity as it was as I went to bed and so wasnt 100% awake but it was in the order of a few ml only....

But about a few months previous to that I did submerge it in fresh water, and it kept working fine. I think this was a slight deterioration of any protective coating. As my wife is using it, I can monitor it but knowing she has a Glo as backup isn't too bad

The only other thought is whether there was an unseen spill on it but as I have a fabric-y case I didn't see any water on that. Tis indeed a mystery.

Which relates to waterproofing by sealing mostly. Kobo use a chemical seal on the boards but don't prevent ingress.

https://www.hzo.com/in-the-news/raku...thanks-to-hzo/

"Goodbye port covers. Utilizing HZO’s waterproof coating, Rakuten Kobo has released an IPX8 rated version of its popular Kobo Aura H2O waterproof eReader without rubber plugs needed to prevent water ingress. The first-generation product featured port covers that were required to achieve IPX7 water protection.

HZO’s innovative thin-film coating solution provides the Kobo Aura H2O with unmatched protection by shielding the internal circuitry of the eReader to prevent damage caused by liquids and moisture, making Kobo’s new eReader sleeker, lighter, and safe to use anywhere, including the beach or even in the bath.

The Kobo Aura H2O is the second Kobo eReader to feature HZO Protection. Kobo’s flagship product, the Kobo Aura ONE debuted last August with the same IPX8 rating and to rave reviews."

It seems soap etc isnt meant to be an issue - they say

HZO protects electronics from the most demanding environments with world-class nano coatings.

HZO is the global leader in delivering world-class protective nano coatings that safeguard electronics from the most demanding environments – be it water, salt, dust, dirt, coffee, or corrosive materials. We work with some of the largest companies across industries from design through production, no matter the volume, complexity, or protection required to deliver a better, more reliable and more durable water resistant and waterproof product.

Waterproof your Kobo Aura H2O (Model number N250 only)

If you have a Kobo Aura H2O with a port cover on the bottom, keep the port cover firmly closed to prevent water from entering the Micro USB port and Micro SD slots.

That's possibly to protect the SD card

The H2O is waterprrof but the electronics inside are not. The port cover is needed to protect water from entering via the ports.

Do you know it's probably reading in the bat that caused the problem with the waterproofing?

Have you tried a dehumidifier, one that takes excessive moisture (humidity) out the air? If so (and if your issue happens again), place the dehumidifer in a closet or small room - along with your ereader - and close the door at night and check it in the morning.

We sometimes have to use one here in the winter and summer, due to the way homes are constructed, in addition to the issue that central air/heat is only available to the (mostly) wealthy.

Good thing I only fill my bath with water then. And yes, I guess it MAY have. But that wasn't the question, AGAIN the question was whether anyone else had any experience on degradation of the coating Kobo uses.

Going to keep an eye on it (as it's now my wife's and will have far less use as I'm addicted lol). But seemed odd as it was only now it has happened, and the signs were more of software rot than anything. So far it's behaved like a charm. If it ever happens again I can get some silica gel from work and put it in a bag with it.

I would suggest treating the Kobo Aura One like there is no waterproofing since it seems that the waterproofing may not be fully working due to the head/steam/humidity of the bath,

Also, don't use your Kindle in the bath or it could also end up like the KA1.
