Older Kindles maintained their Amazon content when deregistered. Newer ones do not.

Fire tablets have always lost all Amazon content when deregistered.

My best guess would be, that the book was still on the device, it turned on, synced, and got the signal to unregister. So once out of book in library view it had time to show no more books. Would explain why it happened without user input - if that is what happened during Amazon's cleanup of cloud.
