Entitlement and privacy are two totally different concepts. Privacy is a basic human right. Everyone should have the right to privacy, unless there is a reason to suspect they are committing criminal acts. Entitlement is being given something extra you didn't earn. Now I see your point if you mean all the yammering about people being "entitled" simply because they're of a certain race — which is pure... you know what.

I know they're different concepts. They're just both constantly overused ad nauseam, imho.

Not for technical reasons. In an ideal world, Kobos and Kindles would be communicating to the mothership using a documented protocol, and interested people could create their own replacement. Calibe plugins would have been created years ago.

KOReader has a reading location sync function. You can create a KOReader Sync account or host your own koreader-sync-server.

It works quite nicely for syncing last read location between Kobos and JB Kindles for sideloaded DRM-free EPUBs.

Why is it nobody will say what it is they want privacy from? I'm asking because I'm interested.

Okay. I don't see it your way but you're "entitled" to your opinion on this. I think the fact that there have been so many privacy breaches, that Facebook, Twitter, Amazon, Google (you name it corporation) seem to think their user databases are happy hunting grounds for profit, warrants discussion about privacy issues. But, at least with corporations you can try to avoid contact with them (good luck doing that with Google if you use the Internet). What's really galling is that government entities also sell your contact (and other) information. When I used to compile mailing lists (about 2006) we would get catalogs were we could buy lists from the DMV, with addresses and make of car — so, presumably, you could target high-end products to owners of certain classes of cars. That's not the business of the state, to sell personal information to corporations. But now it's much worse than it was 12 or 15 years ago when I was making those mailing lists.

At any rate, Tolinos and the Tolino Cloud offer a way to sync any ePub (with DRM or without).

At one time it was assumed that a business transaction between you and any company was private — that third party entities weren't entitled to personal information about you (via information purchase or other means). That a warrant was needed to obtain information about those who were suspected of committing a crime.

They even wrote an amendment to the U.S. Constitution about this...

The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized. — 4th Amendment

I want your real name, your address, your bank account last movements, your phone agenda with info about your contacts and your health tracks. I want them because you don't have nothing to hide, do you?

Send me a couple of naked pictures too, while you're gathering all that info

Privacy is not an all or none game: is tied to personality and self-revelation. People choose what they want to show about themselves or to whom and what they want to keep private.

I'm not saying I don't want to keep some things private. But if I'm going to register my Kobo and buy eBooks from Kobo, then I have to give some information to them. I don't have a problem with that or I would not be reading eBooks.
