I was successful in getting the price of a "Penguin Classics" eBook (Robert Fagles translation of the "Aeneid") reduced from a ridiculous $40 down to about $12 by asking MobiPocket to check the price. They did so, corrected it the next day, and the reduced price fed through to all the other Mobi retailers - I then bought the book from BoB.

So there is hope!

Writing to Mobipocket is the one thing I haven't done yet, as I kind of did not think of it while I write to the publisher and FW.

Worth trying so will try and see.

Similar problem

I wanted to purchase Shadow Country, which one the National Book Award last week. When I looked on the Sony Store it was roughly $14 (30% off the original price). I hesitated and thought I would purchase it in a couple of days.

When I returned to the store this week the book had jumped up to $28 and had a new original price of $40. It was this price at all other ebook stores, except Amazon.

However, on the Random House site, the ebook is clearly listed as $16.

http://www.randomhouse.com/catalog/d...=9781588368249

I have written Random House but have received no response. When I called Sony, they admitted the sale and the original prices both jumped, but stated it was because the publisher sets the price.

In case you haven't checked today, Shadow Country is down to $11 on Sony.

Nothing to report as far as my letter of complaint goes. I'm trying to be patient as it's almost Thanksgiving, but if I haven't heard anything back by next week, I'm going to assume HarperCollins could care less.

Sorry if I'm grumpy. It's been a bad week.

Thanks, tlrowley. I will buy it now, but it still puzzles me how inconsistent the prices are. Was $14, yesterday $28, today $11.

Go figure.
