There is no Default device for Download and Transfer via USB.
In essence, there is.

As I wrote above, I always select transfer over USB before I click buy.

Then a dialog page comes up that asks which device I want the USB transfer
to be for, and my default device is already filled in. I click the button and the
file transfer begins, or I select a different device before I click the button.

Multiple times per day. Daily incrementals kept for minimum of one year. In addition to file backups, image backups monthly. All my data is on three separate servers, one remote. (Yeah, before I retired, I was an I.T. guy!)

I found that out. Which is why I have to use that menu every time to select my Paperwhite. The Calibre plug-in is set up to De-DRM things destined for my Paperwhite or for my Kindle For PC, but I don't know how/where to set it up to De-DRM for my Fire tablet. No matter, since once De-DRM'ed, things are readable on the Fire (not that I ever read them on the Fire). The cookbook that I started this thread about downloaded for the Fire, which is what triggered my post when I saw that Calibre didn't De-DRM it. If I actually cared about this stupid free cookbook, I could possibly re-download it for Kindle For PC and De-DRM it that way (???), but I don't care and just deleted the file in this case.

Textbooks are another type that may use this format.

Here's a very recent thread about the same thing:

To be more correct, it's Amazon's PDF format.

When it launched 6 years ago, the only app that supported it was Kindle 4 PC. It's never worked on Kindles, so far as I know.

I know that. If there was a way to force them to work on e-ink devices, the results would be terrible. I've been using kindles since 2009. My comments here were because these books aren't some "new" thing, or a format "mistake". For many books, they are a necessary format choice.

But...for cookbooks, imo, they are not necessary. I've got many cookbooks on my account, and the vast majority are not in a fixed format. This makes them readable on smaller screens, because the text can be adjusted.

I don't know anything about the behind the scenes of setting up a Kindle book. I suspect using this Print Replica format is "easier" which is why some publishers use it. Also, imo, I think that is short sighted on their part. (Unless the book actually should be formatted that way, like graphic novels) It's right up there with "scan and ocr" without proofreading.
