Another 2 thing I hate: font-size in the main paragraph and line-spacing. Both are useless.

Easy way to change epub margins in Calibre

Click Apply and then when you convert, your margins will be what you've set under Page Setup
THIS WORKS!

IMHO, it's better to learn the code (unless you already know HTML/CSS) and change the margins. There could be other issues such as font size for the main text, line height needing removing, paragraph spaces to remove, and other things you would want to fix that a conversion will not fix.

Making epub margins smaller in Calibre

I use FBR (Favorite Book Reader) with my android to read epubs and it allows you to change font size and adjust line spacing. It even allows you to change the margins...to a point. For some epubs, even when you set the R and L margins to 0, you end up with thousands of pages of what looks like a newspaper column. I have been using Calibre to convert epubs, which sometimes corrects the margins to something readable and also allows inserting a book cover where there is none. However, I was not aware of this handy preference feature which also allows you to shrink the margins of the epub you are converting. And you don't have to know how to program. No problems so far and the simplest solution I have found to a frustrating problem.

CSS/HTML code has nothing to do with programming. It's pretty simple, actually. Anyone can learn it relatively quickly. I did and I know zilch about computer programming.

Sometimes there are things one can only fix with editing the book code, not by conversion.

Book code

I don't have time to learn how to edit book code. This is easier and anyone can do it. To each his own.

It's actually very easy. And the more you learn, the more you can fix. As has been said, there is a lot you cannot fix with a conversion.
