OK, I have no idea what you are doing or wanting.

Firstly, we have given you several suggestions on what to use as a template to put the tag column in the Subtitle. So, yes you can do that now.

But, I have no idea how sorting comes into it. There isn't a sort option for the subtitle. And now it sounds like you populate the tags with the series name. Just putting tags in the Subtitle sounds like it would do what you want. And I have no idea why you don't know where you ebooks go. I'm must be completely missing something.

When Calibre was first written, it was called libprs500. It was written for the Sony Reader PRS-500. The Series column you understand. But when you wanted to create a collection and didn't need a series number you used the Tag column. That was where you put in a collection name such as Science Fiction.

I know you can still populate the Tag column and the Series column. But when the eBook isn't part of a Series, you populate the Tag column to manage the collection. By default, if the Series column is empty, the Series field in the Kobo database remains empty.

What I want is to use the Tag field to populate the series Series field in the Kobo database is the Series column is empty. This way when sorting by series, books that are standalone that say belong in Science Fiction get sorted by series correctly.

I hope this makes sense to you. It would be the same as Series without a series number.

And now that you know the history of the Tag column, you now know why I say to use the Tag column when setting up what columns to use for collections. Because Tag already exists and that's what it was used for from day one.

The tags do create collections on my Sony PRS350. Which was a surprise as the Kindle DXG and then the Kobo used a custom column I'd created for collections. Which the Sony naturally wasn't using as the Calibre driver for PRS350 didn't use it.

My tags are a mess as they have only been set by Gutenberg and some other Public Domain titles I've imported. I'd only set tags on the books I was proof reading.

Sorry, but that isn't the history of the tags column. It is the one way of creating collections on one device type. This did get inherited by other devices (the Kobo driver collection management is based on it).

And, as I have said more than once, there is currently no way to set the series info to something other than the calibre series. I have no interest in making the change needed to do this. And, I don't really think it is a good idea. Why not just make collection for the tags like on the Sony?

The Tags column did set collections on the 650. If you import an eBook and the Tag column gets filled in, that's because there's rubbish in the OPF.

Kobo can use the Tags column for collections if you specify it in the KoboTouch or KoboTouchExtended drvers.

I specify Tags and Series. I don't see why creating a custom column for collections when Tags and Series already exist.

Yes, that is the history of the Tags column. I had a 500 which was the first Sony Reader sold in the US. I used Libprs500. Libprs500 eventually became Calibre.

When I am not sorting by collections, I usually sort by recent. But if I sort by series, it would be good if the books sorted correctly. Is there a technical reason why this cannot be done?

And what you have completely forgotten is that what is used for collections on these devices is configurable. You get to say. The defaults appear to be "series, tags".

Define "correctly". As far as I can tell the series sorting is already correct. What you are proposing sounds absolutely horrendous and would completely screw up the sorting.

And an important thing: That is my opinion.

And for the record, the series sorting on the device, in calibre template terms, is:

Code:
{series}{series_index}{title}
Which means the non-series books are intemixed with the series books based on the title.

Yes, there is a technical reason: I don't want to do it. And I think you would struggle to find someone who was willing to do it. If you can convince someone to add series to the metadata plugboards, then you will be able to achieve what you want. But, if you do, I'll ask you not to post a screenshot, as it would give me nightmares.
