Your solution to cite chapter and paragraph is really good and more universal (anyone with any software can count chapters and paragraphs to verify a certain citation).
With Calibre i think it would be better to have this feature as a setting (on/off) not as a CSS "hack". A citation would be then easily verified with Calibre and that would also promote Calibre in the academic world.

Also dreaming with an easy way to copy a sentence that add extra info to copied web text: it will get the basic location data (author, title, chapter, paragraph) when it gets pasted ready into a doc file so its faster to create quick citations.
For reference it was the concept used by Tynt - now closed - or the script Automated Link Attribution with Copy-Magic-Paste https://moz.com/ugc/copymagicpaste-a...n-your-website
Also see this reply: https://stackoverflow.com/questions/...opied-web-text

Note: I do understand that this feature is not required for the vast majority of plain users, but for academics it would be useful... an not just for full citations but for quick (personal) citations too!

If the on/off setting was enabled, I'd like to have the reference info included when I did the Ctrl+C --- e.g. "Blah, blah, blah." «authors: xxxx & yyyy; title: Some Book; chapter: Chapter Three; para: 12» --- if I didn't want it then I could delete when I paste.

I'm a non academic wishing for something like this to put into my journal, bloggers might like it too.

Release: 4.6 [13 Dec, 2019]
Viewer: Re-enable the old reference mode from calibre 3.x
https://calibre-ebook.com/whats-new

And it works!
Now who can create the feature so the reference info will be included when pressing Ctrl+C / Ctrl+V
