Until then, my Glo HD is good enough, although I might pick up a Clara if it's on sale.
Consider: do you really need your entire library with you like that all the time?

Yep, and thank god I did. A hard drive crash made me lose my ENTIRE collection and the only backup copy I had was on my Glo HD. Storage is cheap (A 128GB microsd card can be found for less than $40) so why not carry around everything if you can?

Why don't you just use collections?

Have you fixed this problem? I mean, relying on a fairly delicate device like an e-ink ereader for your primary backup sounds like a pretty bad idea.

New computer and additional storage, sure. But at the time, the Kobo was all I had and it was never intended to be a primary backup device; it just worked out that way. And I will continue to have multiple backups whenever I can, and that includes on the Kobo. :-)

All of my ebooks are backed up onto 4 hard drives, plus on a netbook and a laptop. Same with all of my saved documents and photographs on the 4 hard drives. Losing any of those would be a complete disaster for me. I could at least download the majority of my books again from where I bought them, but the photos and documents would be irreplaceable and heartbreaking to lose the photos. I agree that using an ereader as your backup is the least reliable. I've had more sd cards fail on me in the last several years than I've had hard drives fail in over 30 years of computers.

Honestly the 4GB that's standard on my Glo HDs is more than enough. With my first reader the thought of keeping every book with me was enticing, but around 1100 books I noticed my reader (back then the Sony 350) was slowing down noticeably and realized there was no benefit to keeping every single book on the reader. So I usually keep around 500 books on the reader now, more than enough to give me a really good selection of books even if I went away for months.

My ebook collection is about 18 GB including manga and comics. Got a 32 GB KA1 LE (had to import it from Japan). The Forma 32 GB edition is not available outside Kobo countries, so I'd have to import that too (I live in Sweden, and many stores here sell Kobo, but not the 32 GB Forma). My Glo HD has a 64 GB card because microSD storage is so cheap nowadays.

there's a very simple answer: ebay!

buy a used older model with an SD card slot

Those aren't backups. They're replicas. While replicas can be used to stage backups they are not themselves backups.

So buy an external hard drive that you can use for backups.

The best solution is to buy at least two external hard drives for backups.

Yes you'd have your eBooks on your Reader. But you would not have the originals and you would not have any customization you've done to your Calibre database. It's a lot of work to put things back the way they were.

agreed indeed it is a simple answer/solution, although it's not the best one if you would like to have some of the new features/hardware that are only available with the latest/newer models.

Kobo could if they wanted follow the Kindle Paperwhite 4 example of offering a 32GB model as standard with the latest/future ereaders. they might find it beneficial/profitable.

best wishes koboy

To be honest, I don't see a need for 32GB with a screen that's not big enough. I think it's silly to pay extra for a PW4 32GB. The Forma yes because of the 8" screen.
