As the OP was talking about AZW, they obviously use Kindle for PC. Otherwise they wouldn't have any AZW files in their library.

OK, I do use Kindle for PC to download my books, then import into Calibre, hoping that Alf's tools work, and then convert. But I have been importing large batches at one time as I've been rebuilding my Calibre library after losing a lot of stuff last year when I made some mistakes in transferring it to my new computer.

Kovid's way of determining exactly which books are affected will be a big help and is exactly what i was hoping to learn. But all the other info you all have posted is a big help as well, as I did not realize that about the AZW3 vs AZW. I will do a few at a time this time around and be more quick to catch any problems.

I have used the Count Pages plugin for this. It will fail to count the number of pages for any books that have DRM or are broken in some other way. Have it update the column for the page numbers and any that have no value have a problem.

This sounds like a great idea. So I installed the Plugin, restarted Calibre, but when I try to use it, it says to specify Custom Column. Can you help me figure that part out? Do I need to make a Custom column for the info to go in, and choose it? Sorry to be dense; I've not done much with Plugins other than Alfs tools.

edited - OK, I figured it out and ran it - bingo, it worked great! Thank you!

I went back and searched using your above suggestion. Question is, I can't understand why I had so many AZW books (ie, with DRM) when I always import books with Alf's tools active. I found about 130 books (out of ~1250 total)

Any ideas?

Do you import them in bulk usually? The tools tend to fail pretty often in that case. From the de-DRMing viewpoint it's better to import books one by one.

AZW and DRM is not a hard and fast rule. I have 4 AZW without DRM (at least, anymore)
I think it all about Authors wishes and when you acquired them

Yes, I'd been importing them in large batches previously and guess I just never noticed they had not been stripped until I started converting them later. Have now gone back and reimported all that I could find and all converted with no issue so I will keep up with it from here out.

There was a bug in the DeDRM plugin where if you added a number of Kindle eBook (not sure how many was too many), the plugin would fail to remove the DRM from some of them.
