ODF is not suitable for E-Books. It is tied to the internals of OpenOffice software, which is based on an old German StarOffice software. Its document model always was different from what is logical for a book.

For many of us OO/LO meets our needs.
OTOH For corporate use: MS Office is the winner because of the world wide supporting infrastructure. How many places can (prospective) Employees get MS Office training (and/or be certified)? LOTS Now, how many for OO/LO? ![]() IMHO Linux suffers because there are too many distros, each with their quirks. Corporate (and even Small Business) does not have the resources to train the average worker to use Linux (or the in house version). Couple that to the lack of specialty tools (apps) once you get away from the basics. EVEN MAC owners run into this. Or Apps that don't run under emulation <If you emulate Windows: you are sort of running it and can't claim to be a PURE MAC user> W7 took Windows close to where I wanted, then W10 took a lot of control away from me. While this may be good to keep systems better secured for the masses, it also makes it difficult to keep a non-vanilla one running . |

Most "training" on MS Office is about features promoted by marketing. With proper training you can use any Office application properly, because you know the kinds of things you should be doing and how you should approach them.
LibreOffice is also cross platform. |

No Wordprocessor format is directly suitable for ebook. You pick styles and headings that are suitable for ebook. Then you use a conversion or authoring tool to change the source for epub, mobi, azw etc. I've used dozens of WP programs since 1980. All can produce books, magazines, newspapers, reports, web pages, ebooks etc. All are rubbish for program text editing. Traditionally you use the source with a different tool to produce magazines, newspapers, web pages or ebooks. Some authors still use Wordstar (GRR Martin) or Wordperfect on DOS. Sigil and Calibre are good tools. PDF for paper printed books needs no user intervention. I can use MS Word or LibreOffice Writer with Calibre and settings I've made default to produce mobi, AZW and epub that are all perfect with no editing after import to Calibre. You certainly can't produce ebooks direct with MS Word, and LibreOffice PDF export is better than Word's. There is a built in epub export in LibreOffice Writer 6.x which is better than Amazon's limited Kindle Create tool, but both are inferior to Calibre or Sigil (Sigil is more like an early DTP program for ebook rather than paper, so not as automatic just import and click like Calibre.
