Because it would be quite useless on the sides. It needs to use the entire width of the Sigil window to accommodate those notoriously long warning/error messages in any kind of useful, easily readable way. We just added the ability to move it to the top dock area quite recently. Or was that something else? I forget, now.

Yes, the option to place Validation Results on top is new. Personally, I use it.

I find long lines of text hard to read ==>> https://practicaltypography.com/line-length.html

On my setup the full width validation widow is 200+ chars wide.

Added: I realise I could float the validation window but I prefer to have child windows inside the main window. If you have a reasonable size hi-res monitor (e.g. 25" 2560x1440) it should be doable.

I don't really consider what I do in Sigil "reading." Nor do I feel "typography" is an accurate term for describing the presentation of warning/error messages via the gui interface of an application.

We're probably not going to make the change to allow the validation window anywhere. It's already too difficult to rearrange Sigil's widgets in the main window. As soon as you undock one widget. another dock area (usually the wrong one) is trying to claim it as soon as you move it a tiny bit. Making it a complete free-for-all wouldn't really be helping that many people (and would annoy others).

If that's the bar for "reasonable," then I've never owned a reasonable hi-res monitor (not to mention that a lot of my application usage--including Sigil--these days is on a laptop with a 15" screen)

We're not going to be laying out Sigil's gui with the assumption that everyone out there is rocking big, hi-dpi jumbotrons parked in front of their noses. Sigil still needs to make sense on single 1600x900 19" (or even a little less) screens. And on screens that size, having every dock area be fair game for every dockwidget would be a nightmare. Everything's already far too "grabby" for my tastes as it is!

Sigil is indeed at its best on a wide screen, where file list, code view and Preview can sit side-by-side, all at an optimum width. Dual monitors are nice too.

And yes, you can float the validation window, at your chosen width. Onto a second monitor if you have one (highly recommended). Your 'preference' not to maybe should be examined.

@ew - for the task at hand I have three main windows side by side - IrfanView, Sigil and PageView.

Because I am using Pageview I don't need Sigil's Preview, so I was hoping to get more vertical screen-estate by docking the Validation window where it 'normally' lives, on the right edge. The messages from proselint link to the code so for me at least having a semi-detached Validation window is not on.

I don't have the physical real estate for another monitor.

My query regarding not being able to dock the Validation window on the right edge was to check that I hadn't missed something. I hadn't so I'll live with what we have - You can't always get what you want (Jagger '69).
