Pining for Irex maybe a dead end.
The mobi implementation in the iliad i think is proprietary to Mobipocket.

I am not sure how different mobi is in other devices like hanlins, cybook etc., in comparison with the iliad.

Since this implementation seems to be a basic one, is it possible to post requests to Mobipocket to improve their s/w?

On further thoughts, is it possible to hack some and pull the mobi from the hanlins and put them into the iliad? May not be legal though..

Yes, which is why the user community can't improve it. The responsibility for the MOBI Reader is with iRex, not MobiPocket. MobiPocket provides the same Java Reader software to all its licensees, the limitations of the iLiad version (w.r.t. other implementations) are due to iRex.

A more fruitful approach would be to improve FBReader's MOBI support (DRM-free only though). This is already better than the Java-based reader in many respects. The best FBReader implementation for EInk screens is the one in OpenInkPot, but the standard desktop 0.10.X version has already been ported to the iLiad. It just needs someone knowledgeable about iLiad apps to clean it up and repackage it.

AFAIK, FBReader also lacks dictionary lookup, which Mobipocket has...
