My 21-year old pickup isn't as fast as my sisters brand new sedan. But, it's fast enough for me. All of my Kindles, including my favorites the Paperwhites, are wonderful to read on. None are lacking in sharpness so that reading is uncomfortable.
I went into a dark closet and my Oasis 3 was not pulsing. If it had been, I'd probably go see my opthamologist. Batteries don't usually put out fluctuating current. My Oasis 3 is my read-at-home option. It doesn't go out with me because of the size. My Paperwhite can slip in my pants pocket or my shirt pocket if the need arises. I wear Guayabera shirts with four pockets. Since I don't think I have problems with light, the Oasis colored lights don't interest me. My Oasis 3 is new and I'm debating whether I want to keep it or not. I'll probably decide to return it. There is no advantage for me over the Paperwhite and it's certainly not worth twice the price. Kindle did solve the cover fiasco they had with the Oasis 2. I got the cloth cover and it's fine. It actually will protect the device when I drop it and isn't simply there to "splenderize" your Kindle. |

In my case the flickering or pulsing is definitely at a certain brightness range, 3-4, but have to say it's almost imperceptible without the screen protector.
As for batteries and fluctuating current, could be a bad LED, poorly soldered joint or anything else in the circuitry as well. My reason for using a screen protector is that I don't use a case and leave my reader laying around and toss it in my backpack when I travel. I can care less if the body gets scratched up but I want a clear screen. |

Be careful with this! Do an image search on google for "kindle broken screen" and you'll see all kinds of pictures of Kindles with screens that have broken substrates. One common cause of this is a Kindle being tossed in a backpack with out any protection--this happens by other items in the backpack putting pressure on the Kindle and tweaking the screen. Sometimes this happens and you won't know it for a few days--until one day you turn your Kindle on to see a damaged screen. (I think of it like a rock chip hitting your windshield--you might not notice it until all of the sudden the crack starts to spread across your whole windshield.)

Changed my mind. My Oasis 3 is packed up and ready to be picked up by DHL for return to Amazon in Mexico. I decided that, for me, there was no advantage to the Oasis 3, a couple of disadvantages, and it isn't worth the cost.

Given your aversion to buttons and your fondness for Paperwhites, it seems strange that you bought the Oasis at all. Not that it's any of my business, of course. Just wondered.

I am asking because I've got the Voyage and the O2, and for me the O2's screen is just miles away from the Voyage's screen. When I put both side by side, the O2's screen seems washed out. I wonder if the screen got substancially better in O3? |

Another thing I've noticed with all the Oases, but not with the Voyage: the contrast and text darkness is worse on the Oasis when it's been unused for a while. The contrast gets noticeably better when the Oasis (1, 2 or 3, it's the same with all of them) has been regularly in use. What causes this phenomenon, I've no idea, but it should be taken into account when comparing the screens.

That is interesting! Would you please give a better definition of what 'unused for a while' mean? A day without use? A week? |

I just got my Oasis 3, and in my case, the lower contrast vs. the Voyage is quite noticeable.
I think I'm going to stick with the Oasis, regardless, because the warm lighting is a big advantage when reading in low light. I also do quite like the larger screen size. However if I was primarily reading in bright light, I think I'd be inclined to stick with the Voyage. I've just ordered another Oasis from Amazon to see if there might be any variability in contrast between units. |
