Great to hear that you manage to get to the bottom of the issue!

Interesting to hear that you update in the same way that I do, always via a downloaded ".bin" file with the Kindle staying full-time in aeroplane mode. May be something to do with triggering the problem.

Oh yeah, I always do. First, to prevent jb from being overwritten by an untested and deadly fw version, second to preserve battery.
I almost never need the wifi, even purchased books are downloaded on my personal cloud to be handled by calibre, so I end up using the usb cable anyway.

Uhm... not sure. I don't always follow closely the forums. But a few days ago I noticed some posts where they said that 5.12 (I believe they said 5.12.1, but I might just have been careless enough not to realize the possible difference) was working on the pw4.
So I did the update, with a fresh hotfix, and it worked as usual.
I have SS hack, KUAL with some extensions etc. etc., and they work.

Then, only yesterday I noticed that some of you gurus where talking about the dreadful "no longer you can stop updates" threads, but I was already screwed at that time...
