amazons numbering / naming is a nightmare
wikipedia is best for clearing up confusions amazon marketing dept will quote generation , and/or years as well as numbers, plus they invent/discard names: e.g. kindle Fire ( dropped), voyage ( no longer in production). HDX ( ditto), Paperwhite, oasis... "Basic" is another moveable label - tends to get applied to whatever is the cheapest one at the time. and don't get me started on their use of " all new" ![]() and often there s no visible difference between generations, so if you are looking to buy used on ebay it can be challenging. e.g. a paperwhite gen 1 looks like a paperwhite gen 3 but has poorer resolution... a 3rd Gen HDX looks just like a 4th Gen HDX... this applies to kindles and to tablets- i have twice bought tablet covers that didn't work properly because I muddled my generations , and if you get the gen or year wrong, chances are that auto wake/sleep will not work as they move the magnets around inside the designs. for kindles, try this https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon_Kindle and for fire / kindle fire: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amazon_Fire_tablet then you have to match the wiki entries to whatever marketing blurb you find on the for sale listings Last edited by stumped; 07-28-2019 at 11:41 AM. |

I will say that despite the PDF being a reasonable size (< 7Mb) the performance wasn't great. It took about 5-10s to turn the page. |

Actually if you pick the right download it's much better. So the "hd" cbz file (a.o.t the fhd one) is ~1s page turns which is adequate and as you can see still readable.

Do not download that HD CBZ. Your 500 will either choke on it, be very very very slow, or lock up. It's on old device with a slow processor and not enough memory. The T1 was very slow to display high resolution graphics and that was a more updated Reader. Your 500 works best with 800x600 images. The higher resolution you go the slower it gets until you might find it locking up.

The thing is that this old reader is still suitable for my needs and I updated Calibre (although previous version wasn't that old) and now it converts to lrf with no problem. Now, since the old one works pretty good I have to ask myself what would be the benefits of the new one? Certainly the new one would offer wifi so I just wondered how these "luxuries" work. Plus I also have to have a computer with win XP around to communicate with my reader. I mean I remember when I first got it (was this the first reader ever?) it looked like something from Star Trek, but now it's so outdated that newer windows don't even recognize it. Although I still don't get why manufactures still didn't move from 6 inch screens. |

True that I do miss my page turn buttons (both ways) on either edge, but I will live with the $175+ still in my pocket ![]() |
