It's rather interesting the way your experiences differ from mine. A couple of books where the book I downloaded was not the one that I expected. I did some checking on the Kobo store before contacting Kobo and found that some of their self-published KWL authors had used ISBNs that were issued to other books. This issue was corrected and I received the correct books. I will admit that in the funniest case, receiving a soft core porn book in Portuguese was a bit of shock to the system when I was expecting a YA rated title.

And yet what this segment of the thread came out of was a reference to Amazon pulling Animal Farm and 1984 back from their customers. As for Kobo's customer service, I've had no problems getting my issues corrected in a timely fashion (I've always wanted to use that phrase... ).

And yet, another publisher who ran their own ebook store did exactly that. When one of their authors signed a contract with another publisher and, as her contract allowed, had the rights to her other books revert to her, they pulled them from their store and from the libraries of their customers though they did email me with about 2 weeks notice. Admittedly, I think their total stable of authors was never greater than 6 or 7 -- they were hoping to grow enough to become a niche publisher. Sheesh... been close to a decade since they went under. Time flies when you are reading good books.

If you already had a working key from Nook Study that the Alf plug-in found, it should be the same for books downloaded using the Windows 10 app. At least that has been my experience.

I haven't purchased a book from B&N for years, but all the ones that I had previously purchased, I can still download with the Windows 10 app, import to Calibre and DRM is removed. (The epub in the Nook folder had DRM, the imported epub in the Calibre folder did not.)

I'm pretty sure the Alf plug-in was able to obtain a key from the Windows 10 app. I purchased a Surface that has never had Nook Study installed. I installed the app, Calibre and the Alf plug-ins and have not had DRM issues. Others said the same worked for them. Still others say it does not. It's a crap-shoot.

I just bought the new Nook 7.8" reader and I am very happy with it. I just don't buy my books from B&N.

I think that is wise. I'm not advocating for people to keep buying from B&N. Just want to say there may still a way to access previously purchased books.

I have a nook simple touch, and recently bought a book that could not be downloaded to it. B&N reluctantly refunded my money, whereas I've never had issues with Amazon and Kobo refunds. I buy a lot of books, and some of them are on sale at Amazon but not Kobo, and Kobo will price match and refund to 90% of the other retail's price (including tax). Be aware that Kobo sometimes asks for a screen print of the on-sale page, so always take a screen print when price-matching.

I've issues with B&N Nook for Windows app downloading encrypted PDF files, especially with cookbooks. I don't think the DRM can be removed from them, so I only buy fiction from B&N these days.

I've also had problems lately with downloading books from Kobo to Linux with Adobe Digital Editions 1.7 running on Wine. When this happens, I can download them on other computers, but I think sometimes I have to use the latest ADE 4.5. Some people say that this could mean you could get an DRM epub that can't have the DRM removed, but I've never seen that.

I have Windows 10 on my surface pro 5. I have downloaded the nook app from Microsoft’s store and my nook books show up.....but none of the books will open. I have tried several times uninstalling and reinstalling the app....still no go. Any ideas on what is going wrong here?
