I would suggest it if: you are having issues with Calibre's performance (although sigil is an option here), you want to learn more about epubs, or you are most productive working with it directly. Note that for most tasks, I usually use it as part of other scripts, not directly.

Including the text. The layout wouldn't be possible without it, and the text is an integral part of the html/xml anyways. It would be less efficient to decompress and load the text every time it is needed.
