I buy my books from Amazon and read on a Kobo. But even if I were a Kindle owner I would likely still wind up sideloading. |

I can’t say I have the slightest interest in having a TOC in a novel. They’re much more useful for non-fiction, to be sure.

I've bought collections of short stories, notably the Lock and Key Classic Mystery and Detective one, which don't have TOCs or any indication of where one story ends and another begins. I had the same problem with a book of Jane Austen's Juvenilia. This was unreadable. I had no idea what or who I was reading, especially with the Lock and Key. It didn't cost much, about 99p from Amazon.

The first thing I do when I open up a new novel is look at the table of contents and find out where the post-book junk starts (advertisements, excerpts, etc.) Typically there will be 10 or so pages. However, once in a while there's a lot more. I like to know before I start reading that the novel actually ends on page 350 of 400 or whatever so I am not taken by surprise.

I don't use Calbire - I read mainly library books as-is. I think just about every book I have read has a table of contents. Even if they don't have every page of junk listed separately I can usually at least see where the last chapter/epilogue is and where any following material starts.

An Android ereader like Onyx or Boyue will read the most formats uncoverted. Also Koreader and Coolreader on a Kobo or *Kindle will read most formats. I think the only difficult formats to read will be Amazon and Kobo's formats, kfx and kpub respectively. Out of those two, kpubs are easy to convert, kfx not so much. You're probably going to have to do some converting whatever route you take.
*Kindle will only run koreader if jailbroken, which is pretty much impossible nowadays. I don't reccommend a Kindle. Last edited by Pajamaman; 07-01-2019 at 10:57 AM. |

As for being "so lazy" that I don't want to tether my e-reader to my computer (desktop, by the way, not laptop), I guess I can say "guilty". I don't see any reason to store all of my books on my reader, and I never know what I'm going to want to read. I do keep enough on my reader that I won't be stuck without a book if I'm in a place with no connectivity, but I don't want to be limited to them. Shari Shari |
