Using your Author Sort column as an example, the image attached to this message shows the information for a custom column that will add an author sort column. Other than columns that are built from other columns, the content of a column is static.

the content appears to be static.
It rarely changes, but it has to recalculate every time you start Calibre, or make changes (just to the record? or any record?). That can be a lot of overhead on a big library.
