Have you tried calling Amazon to see if they can register the Kindle over the phone? They used to be able to do this. At least then you could download and transfer books over USB and read them on the old Kindle, even though Sprint support is gone in most regions.

Yes, that's what Amazon did for me. I have Kindle DX Graphite (3G only [AT&T]) and called them about this issue. They registered my Kindle on their end so I could at least download my library to a computer and side load via USB. It works great.

Note: My Kindle unit itself still thinks it is unregistered. But it doesn't matter when reading side-loaded library since those books are downloaded targeted to my Kindle DXG registered on Amazon side. The serial number matches so they open fine. This works on the Kindle unlimited books too.

DiapDealer, if your K2US still works then please do not factory reset it. At least create a backup image with Yifanlu's tools. We might have a chance to study whether the problem is because firmware flaws that factory reset triggered or it is at Amazon side.

I'll hold off for now, but I must warn you that my days of making/transferring images, rooting/jailbreaking and just generally hacking around in these devices are pretty-much behind me. I take no pleasure in that sort of thing any more.

Yeah, same here. I rooted an android phone and installed cynogenmod on it and stupidly didn't back up the original system and thus couldn't restore it. There were little nits and problems with cynogenmod that made me regret having installed it. Lesson learned!

It starts. It's still registered. And it connects/syncs/browses fine (B002 prefix; latest 2.5.8 software). But it barely holds a charge. Took me 10 minutes just to remember how to restart it from the menus, and I must have tapped the screen at least 27 different times doing that much! It's like playing with one of those old LED football handheld games, but much less fun.

Anyway. I can't begin to remember how I would go about browsing the file system. If it involves installing software on a PC, I'm afraid I'm not interested.

I don't have wifi or 3G etc, all my books are sideloaded. The above is how I first registered my Paperwhite 2, which worked perfectly fine like this for years (2014-2018). In 2018 I wanted to update the firmware so went to a friend's house to borrow their wifi, registered over the wifi, gave the device a name, and downloaded the newer firmware. Everything went fine.

The PW2 now just happily works totally in airplane mode, all books being downloaded to my pc then transfered via usb to the kindle.

As others have said, try giving Amazon a call, then sideload all your books.

Hahaha.. the muscle memory is so funny. We are now too much accustomised with a touch screen. I have the same experience when I have to use an old non-touch screen keyboard only Samsung phone because of the charger of my main phone died and the replacement did not arrive yet.

I and knc1 active in https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sh...d.php?t=319505

In Windows, the file system is hidden. I have to use NiLuJi's jailbreak and usbnetwork in the Kindle DX; TightVNC and Putty in PC. So yes, it involved PC. Akh, pity that you won't deal with PC! But knowing that some Gen 2 survive if it is not factory reset showed something wrong with the factory reset and de-registration routines in firmware 2.5.8 plus Kindle service update.

The two directories that I pointed-out before are the directories where I believe Amazon store the certificate to connect to their server. Factory reset Kindle Gen 1-2 lost this and Amazon server currently did not hold the backup certificate. If we could find the certificate from a working Gen 2 Kindle, we might able to patch this certificate if it is public domain and not so encrypted.

What happened in 2017 was probably Amazon opened access to the backup certificate for a while and close it again with a motivation behind.

I did that currently.
The flaws in Gen 1-2 was triggered by factory reset of a firmware update that Amazon published. This is not good. A firmware update should not cause these registration problems.

What did Amazon say? Didn't they come up with a solution of some kind? They want you to keep buying their books.

In Amazon Forum, they said they are working for a solution but no ETA. I hope this ETA will come before all the complaints evaporate and this thread submerges.

Amazon has fixed just now! My Kindle DX is now can register.
I will now make an image file of my Kindle DX to make sure this will never happen again. Thanks all, thanks Amazon.

Now you can buy lots of books and they can make money from you again, (just kidding).

What Amazon did is not a permanent fix. I can confirm that my neighbour factory reset K2 unable to register. It just missed the time window.

Edit: The registration is still work but first you must ask Amazon CS to register the Kindle at their end.
