Believe me, my mom likes her "fluff" too But she has loved the Kite Runner and less-fluffier bestsellers too (most of which she has gotten passed on by me, hence the desire to share).

I keep looking at the reviews for "The Shack" and avoided for the same reason...likewise not a fan of most Oprah recommendations.

I will say that of the books that were on my Amazon wishlist that haven't been converted to Kindle are historical-based or non-fiction novels that don't make the NYT bestsellers list...read some excellent ones and that is the biggest gap in my reading since going electronic.

The Firm??? Oh my jeeps .... piece of absolute crap. The author clearly knew (and still knows) zero about big firm practice. Or, about practice in any size firm. And, yes, I know he's a lawyer ... but that doesn't mean he knows about firm practice.

I started laughing at the point of the book where they give this kid ... who hasn't even taken the bar exam yet ... a huge complex partnership agreement to work on. Riiiiight .... there isn't a firm on the planet who has their new associates do anything before the bar exam but STUDY for the freaking bar exam!!! And, they don't get handed much in the way of complex work for about the first year (sometimes two) of practice.

Oh, man that book was such a massive misrepresentation of law firms. Absolutely one of the worst pieces of tripe I have ever read. Makes some of the idiotic stuff I see on the TV and in films look intelligent.

The other thing that had me worrying was the posts I read on the Amazon forums about what seems like a lot of people having problems with things like having to reset their Kindle frequently or it suddenly dying. Neither of which I have experienced (knock-on-wood) and I know more people will post because they have a problem than not. Is the need to reset that common?

That will just frustrate her and my brother and I have had enough headaches walking her through her computer woes and questions (I live 500 miles away). Did I mention that the only reason she has a computer is so she can receive and forward jokes on email? She also has a cell-phone and will use it to make calls when out but still doesn't know how to pick up her messages
It's interesting that you should mention that. My Kindle used to freeze from time to time, but it didn't take me long to learn that it was usually due to the battery getting too low.

Now, I keep it charged up, and I haven't had a freeze in ages. Mrs. Moon's Kindle froze (for the same reason) and she was so afraid she had broken it that she didn't want to call me. I told her that I really doubted she would break it ... and that she really should just call me. Once you know how to reset it .... it's not really all that awful a thing to do. But, honestly, most of the time it's just a low battery.

There you go, proving my point. To each his/her own.

I didn't really want to get into a debate about any specific book... but what I think of fluff I didn't think of The Firm.

I hate reading books that contain stuff about Flying or Computers that is just so wrong it has me yelling at it.

You can always include the Kindle support number with her order and tell her they are there to answer her questions!
My Kindle locked up and I had to reset my Kindle for the first time...

I think I jinxed myself

Me too, but then I've flown planes. But, as you (and I) feel about those books, I also feel about "The Firm" because the legal plot holes were so freaking HUGE!!! About as likely as a 18 year old soloing for the first time on Monday and getting his commercial pilot's license that next Friday.

I don't know that I'd call it "fluff" exactly, just a really badly thought out plot line. And, the sad thing is, it would have been a good story if the author had actually made it even marginally realistic.
