I do appreciate your opinion, but in reading a lot of old books that were scanned in for Google books I happen to like the look.

I also see that Gutenberg Press also tries to maintain the look as well.

Thank you.

Thank you for all your help. As a person who started out trying to write long stories in Word/OpenOffice, I find it better to have it in an E-Pub format. and yes there is a lot to learn and experiment with.

I can only hope that any input I give is also helpful.

Thank you

I did say it was my personal opinion.
& I have never searched for this, but if there are any reputable studies/surveys as to whether readers WANT dropcaps in their purchased e-books, I'd be interested to see the results. I have seen readability studies only.

but as more and more people read on small screens, my prediction is that they would be down-voted.

and unfortunately there's not likely to be an on/off dropcaps toggle in actual device controls

to me , dropcaps are even less useful than reading that the author has dedicated this one to "Mabel".
Mabel, and her mum, may appreciate it but for the rest of us it's a waste of a page. I think amazon smartly opens a kindle book on the page after that one to reduce complaints

so I will just leave you with " when was the last time you saw a dropcap in an online newspaper " ?

I like drop-caps but I accept that many people don't. And in my country I read drop-caps everyday in online newspapers. Here two examples from two different newspapers:

About 10 minutes ago ==>> Watch: The battle for Baghuz - Isil's last Syrian stronghold

And in case your thinking, but not in 'Merica ==>> https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2...he-blues-alive If you page down, you'll find more, and if you read the text you'll understand why they're there - to signal a break in the narrative.

Psst : I don't much like non functional drop caps either, nor fancy scene break curlicues (fleurons ?) - and I rip the covers of ebooks and I shove all the front matter down the back, but...

I don't know what fleurons are but I'd probably not like them either

Just gimme the story, no frills, no previews, no author bios or also by...

Maybe my dislike of extras comes from all those annoying unskippable things there used to be on rental dvds. I should be grateful that no one has invented unskippable epub front ends. Yet!

But I also like the story to end at 100 percent so I can use percent read as a reliable indicator,

OT
I read the online edition of the San Jose 'Murky' News every day. AFAIK, I have never see a drop cap in the 45 years (inc print) that I have been a subscriber
I prefer being able to cherry pick the stories I read without having to wade thru the talking head drivel

Fleurons are flower or leaf shaped ornamental glyphs/images. There are also vignettes (think of a vine around a page), flourishes, embellishments, ornaments and frippery as different varieties of "frilly bits".

Sometimes I like them but all too often they get overused. Much like the em dash, they are best used in moderation.

personally I detest them and they are the first things I rip out of my to-read copy of any book. - so there goes all your hard work!

i think they had their place , in the dark ages, keeping bored monks awake as they hand copied.

now they just reduce overall readability ( several empirical studies have confirmed - ask google)

and the smaller the device screen , the more annoying they become.
I would argue that in one way, they are more-needed now than they were before. The purpose of boxed Caps--which is, after all, what Monks were using--was to indicate the start of new sections, for the reader. Today, in those very same small screens, it can be nearly impossible to tell where a scene-break has occurred, especially if the preceding paragraph is on one screen and the new scene on another.

Incipits had a purpose--and they still do. They weren't only decorative.

Did you rip them out of your print books, too, when you bought a MM PPBK? Just because the 4.25” x 6.87” didn't have a very large page? Presumably not, right?

Personally, I loathe books that look like unvarnished Word files. To me, that's the height of laziness on the part of the publisher. It's the very reason I got into the business in the first place. {shrug}

I'd recommend you to have a try with Atlantis Word Prozessor -> https://www.atlantiswordprocessor.com/en/downloads.htm

It's the best wordprozessor available - IMO, of course - and it also produce pretty nice epubs.
The last usable Word was the Version of 97 in my opinion...

I love that American style of 'literary journalism'. Echoes right back to Thurber, even Twain.

Always good to be reminded that it's the content that matters. That there IS stuff worth reading.

After spending a day prettifying a self-congratulory autobiography or a manual on Pyramid Selling. Or, best of all, a tome on Acupuncture which, after several chapters of minute detail admitted that the location of the meridians is disputed, and really it's all about the therapist's intentions.... Arrrrrgh!
