Just keep in mind that the 100 free ebooks are all public domain books that you can get from several sources (Project Gutenberg, Feedbooks, Manybooks.net are three examples).

Just a point, but almost any of the readers will work just fine for reading fiction. If most of your books are in .lit you will probably want to get comfortable converting the books to other formats. If your books are mostly .pdfs, you might be better off provided that the ereader reflows the pdf (unless your pdfs are formatted for small screens).

Ultimately, I am still experimenting, but it is pretty easy using convertlit to convert your ebooks to html files and then use a tool like princexml to convert the html into pdf files (though you will need to get use to style sheets to get it to work properly).

Actually, info on this forum is that calibre's lit2oeb is much better at expanding LIT than convertLit is. You may want to give that a try instead.

Of course, it won't strip the drm... you still need convertLIT for that.

Bob,
You should know that for me that is not a problem; I refuse to buy DRM'd books. There is plenty of non DRM'd books out there. Heck, there is enough publich domain books out there to last a life time; that being said, I will buy ebooks, but not if there is DRM on them. Not one.

Thanks again for all the info . I'm going to wait to be 100% sure, good thing it's close to x-mas so I should be able to get either of them for less .

You get CHM support and FB2 support as well, and by simply taking out the SD card with the OpenInkpot/FBReader, you're back to running the standard BeBook firmware.

Plus, if you go through my affiliates page (in the link in my signature line) I get a few bucks towards buying another BeBook for my mother.

Note that I already own and use two Cybooks, a PRS-500 and EB-100.
seems very tempting!
I wished PRS-505 also would have some developing going on...

What makes you think it does not? Firmware upgrades are certainly still possible on the 505 and there has been no announcement that they are not continuing. Sony takes a long time between firmware releases but I would expect at least one more as the ePUB and PDF software matures.

Wow, I sure wouldn't have guessed that. Any way the guys over at OpenInkPot are working on a Sony version and they won't even need to replace the firmware. They are planning on using the autostart capability that Sony built into the SD card to boot a copy of Linux. They need to get a couple of units to test with.

Great news!!^_^
Hopefully I'll be able to read .chm on my Sony as well!

Any idea if Open Inkpot also has an issue with indexing when adding/removing books? (meaning the long delay when adding lots of books)?
