I have a vague memory of uninstalling calibre, removing everything in the registry that referred to calibre, setting the environment variable, and installing a fresh copy of calibre and then running the 'unregister' just to make sure.
OK, thanks for the info. The second paragraph looks like far more work than I want to do, so I'll just see how it goes with my original plan.

It's there because according to microsoft's documentation, this registry key prevents windows from automatically making calibre the default handler for a file type. The documentation also explicitly states that it should not prevent the entry from appearing in the open with menu, see https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/win...ell/fa-progids

Apparently your experience indicates that documentation is wrong. I added that registry key because sometimes windows would make calibre the default handler for one or more of the filetypes it registers for and then people would come here and yell at me, accusing me of taking over their filetypes associations.

For what it's worth, I had a similar problem while setting up my new laptop last week. I used the Nirsoft app to resolve the issue.

Is it likely that the MS documentation is wrong? Or is it more likely there's something odd about my own set-up?

It's hard to draw concrete conclusions about such a complex beast as the Windows registry when you only have a sample of one to work with. Were you able to replicate on your own Windows set-up, at all?

given that most (all?) other applications dont set this key and I have found some other posts on the internet about it: https://superuser.com/questions/9819...dows-10/981989

I think I will have calibre stop setting it as well. The most I could replicate on my windows machine is that the key causes calibre to not show up in the initial list of programs to open with, but it can be manually selected.

Oh, OK, I wasn't expecting that! I hope it doesn't create a flood of new complaints.

I don't believe it will because as far as I know you had it all correct in your detailed post.
