So your best bet would be a sony if you need DRM-protected Adobe support, Mobipocket can always be deDRMed (Well, almost always anyways)

Not sure which library/ies you plan to choose, but I would check their offerings and see which format they offer most books in.

My library clearly has many more books in pdf format than mobi. And the majority of their mobi books are also offered in pdf format but not vice versa.
So if my primary source of books were the library, I would pick a reader with good secured pdf support.

While I love my Kindle, I have a friend with a Mac who is considering the purchase of an ebook reader.

What problems might she have with conversion software like Mobi2mobi, Kindlefix and Mobidedrm operating in her Mac environment. Are there any other "gotchas" that might influence her decision to purchase the Sony 505 vs the Kindle?

Would appreciate recommendations discussing both devices with a Mac environment.

Thanks

All of the current E-Ink readers will mount as a file system if plugged into a Mac. This mean that files can can just be dragged between devices to load/backup eBooks and other files.

Most of the conversion programs you mentioned are written either in Python or Perl. Both of these are supported on a mac. The main thing is not what is supported on a mac but the need to learn a command line on the mac. A Unix like shell is supported but she will need to learn to use it for some of the utilities.

I can't talk about the Kindle, but the Sony works fine with a Mac using Calibre (although I did register mine first on a Windows VM). Calibre also handles some format conversions through it's GUI (so long as there is no DRM on the file).

Whichever she decides to get, point your friend here and there should be some-one who can help, or at least point her in the right direction, if she runs into any problems.
