I like your Gnu Linux Avatar. There are some features in KePub on the Kobos that aren't available in ePub, but nothing that I care about. But if the book comes in KePub format I (usually) just leave it that way – unless the typesetting is really terrible.

What really makes the Kobos shine (in my opinion) is the ability to patch the software.

That's going to be a huge difference. However, I've recently read a couple books on an Ectaco jetBook I found cheap and — with an embedded font — it really stands up pretty well to my modern(ish) eReaders. I was a bit surprised.

Hoping it will definitely be easier on the these old eyes. I have a Galaxy Note and I was really surprised at the clarity on that. Just a little small though. I had a Sony PRS600 for a short time, it was stolen, and when I bought the libre the most important thing to me was the lighting. I was a little shocked at the lack of choice on the market though I hadn't really kept up with what was out there.

I'm able to purchase books from Amazon, Kobo or B&N and read them on either my Aura or my Nook with equal ease. And if I purchased a Kindle, I don't think the process would be any more difficult.

With Calibre and Alf's DRM help, no reader feels tied in to a single vendor.

At that time, you could download from a web browser so I downloaded my purchases, removed the DRM (those tools were around before I started using calibre) and copied the resultant epubs to my Kobo.

Yes, it is a lot easier now with the DeDRM plugin for calibre. However, since my account was cancelled by B&N, I haven't bothered to revisit their store. I will admit to having been amused by the following quote:

Only US and Canadian residents are able to purchase eBooks on the Barnes & Noble website at this time. Unfortunately Canada is considered to be out of USA Territory and you will not be able to complete the normal functions the NOOK offers.”

Or we'll take your money but don't be stupid enough to actually expect anything in exchange.

Having said all that, why would you find my initial statement (post #7: Kobo is just as tied in to a single vendor as a Kindle or a Nook) odd?

Both Kobo and Nook can read any DRM-free ePub that has been sideloaded to it. So can a Kindle, if you shift the format.

For the most part, I don't find any ereader to be tied to a single vendor. Hence any statement that an ereader is tied to single vendor is, IMHO, odd.

Okay, but I was after all replying to the OP's comment:

So I just don't know why my reply was singled out as being odd.

Maybe I'm being too sensitive about the comment, but there it is.
